We had the chance to chat with Blue Jackets GM Scott Howson shortly after the first day of development camp wrapped up at the OhioHealth Ice Haus. Let's kick off today's blog -- and there's lots more to come -- with Howson's meeting with the media.

The following is the transcript of Howson's media session:

On seeing Springfield coach Brad Larsen in action for the first time:

"Everything we do has a purpose to it, and a lot of these players that you see here today will be playing in Springfield at some point. Some will be playing there this year, so it's a good way for our coaches to get acclimated and our players to get acclimated with the coaches."

On Chris Clark's role with the team:
"He's going to be a great addition to our staff. He has great experience and the more he gets to know these players, both on the ice professionally and personally, the better."

On the purpose of having Cam Atkinson and Ryan Johansen at development camp:
"I think it's beneficial to anybody to come to a camp like this. It's a chance to gauge where they are fitness-wise. Ryan has put on a lot of weight and a lot of strength, and it's nice to see that. We'll get him pointed in the right direction for the next two months. Also there's a message that you haven't earned anything yet for next year. They both have some experience in the NHL, but they have to earn their spot for next year."

On if it helps rookies to see experienced players participating in development camp:
"To a certain extent. They're still young NHL players, they haven't proven anything yet. But certainly some of the younger players can see the skill level, the quickness, the skating, the strength that you need to play in the NHL."

On what he hopes the first-time camp attendees get out of this week:
"We hope that they learn to work hard and learn to take responsibility for themselves and for their careers. This is the first step for that. We're here to help them; there are all kinds of resources to help them -- strength coaches, hockey coaches, fitness coaches, and nutrition they're going to learn about. The quicker they learn these things, the better and the quicker their path will be to the NHL."

On who he paid the most attention to in today's session:
"Probably Ryan Murray."
