Scott Howson confirmed during Blue Jackets development camp that one of the two newest additions to the club's amateur scouting efforts would not be much of a surprise. The other new hire was announced this morning as the team continues to round out its scouting staff.

Andy Schneider and Rob Riley were officially named to the Blue Jackets' amateur scouting staff this morning, bringing more than 60 years of hockey experience to the table. Most recently, Riley served as the head coach of the Springfield Falcons (AHL), Columbus' top minor-league affiliate where he was succeeded by assistant Brad Larsen.

Technically, this the second tour of scouting duty for Riley with the Blue Jackets. He was also an amateur scout with the team in the four years prior to being named coach of the Falcons. One interesting tidbit about Riley: after his father, Jack, retired as head coach of the hockey team at West Point in 1986, Rob took over and won 257 games in an 18-year career. Jack and Rob are the all-time winningest father-son combination in the history of collegiate hockey (848 victories).

Schneider, 40, served as assistant coach with the Swift Current Broncos the Western Hockey League last season and has spent the last 18 years playing professional hockey around the world. He's well-thought of in amateur hockey circles and his hire comes as a bit of a surprise, as his skill development work with the Broncos received positive attention. It's a safe bet that one of Schneider's assignments will be to scout junior hockey in Western Canada for the Blue Jackets.
