Murray will have shoulder surgery in next two weeks

Ryan Murray's most prevalent emotion after suffering a season-ending shoulder surgery wasn't anger or bitterness, but disappointment.

There were significant events coming up in his junior hockey career, and months after being selected second overall by the Blue Jackets, he was looking forward to playing on big stages and possibly cracking the NHL roster during training camp.

But those things had to wait in order to do what's best for his career. Murray will have surgery to repair his injured shoulder sometime in the next two weeks, Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson said yesterday.

And despite the disappointment of missing the World Junior Hockey Championship -- where he was Sharpie-d on to Team Canada's star-studded blueline -- Murray has managed to keep his spirits up and look forward to the challenge of getting back to 100 percent.

"I talked to him (Monday), and he's doing quite well," Davidson said. "He was very disappointed in the timing of the whole thing; he wanted to play in the World Junior for Canada and he wanted to come here and see if he could make the club.

"When you’re around the league a long time, you see a lot of different things. It’s just another curveball, and unfortunately it happened to him. He’ll come out with a stronger shoulder and it just takes time to make sure it’s done properly."

Davidson said a rehab schedule for Murray has not yet been determined, and once it's set, a decision will be made on whether the rehab will be spent in Columbus or back at his home.

One thing Davidson said he wanted Murray to know is that he's not the only NHL player or prospect to go through a serious shoulder injury and subsequent recovery period. In his 40-plus years in hockey, Davidson has had the opportunity to see many players bounce back from tough injuries and have healthy, successful careers.

"I talked to him about people who have had shoulder injuries, like Brian Leetch had one," Davidson said. "Al MacInnis had very serious shoulder surgery and he played 22 years. I talked to Ryan a little bit about that, and how important the rehab is going to be.

"His career’s just starting…let’s get through this thing and do it right.”
