Training Camp Report: Day 3

Tuesday, 01.15.2013 / 10:00 AM
By Rob Mixer - BlueJackets.com / CBJ Today

12:00 P.M.: Looks like practice is wrapping up here for the day. We'll have further updates on both the CBJ Today blog and JacketsTV throughout the afternoon. Another solid day of Training Camp presented by OhioHealth in the books!

11:40 A.M.: Richards is trying Derek Dorsett at the front of the net during power play drills today. Dubinsky is in the high slot with Anisimov working the half wall, and in the last rep, Johnson and Wisniewski manned the points. Dorsett's willingness to battle in the hard areas of the ice makes him a solid option at the front, so this shouldn't come as a surprise.

11:35 A.M.: Snazzy little goal from Ryan Johansen during a power play drill just now. Nikitin slid down the left wall and zipped a quick pass across the box to Johansen, who one-timed it behind Bobrovsky. Probably one of the nicer goals we've seen the last couple of days.

Side note: I get overly excited for special teams drills. Bear with me.

11:30 A.M:  Sights from the scrimmage on the main ice:

11:20 A.M.:
We're back at the OhioHealth Ice Haus for the second part of today's practice. The scrimmage ended in a scoreless tie after about 15 minutes of play, and Richards got an extended look at some new lines and pairings during the session.

As the second session begins, the Blue Jackets are going through more puck retrieval and controlled breakout drills. Those are going to continue in earnest, I believe -- you want to make sure everyone knows the "playbook" and all the details are ironed out.

11:05 A.M.: To recap the scrimmage so far....no goals, a few shots off the rush and the goaltenders have gotten a lot of help from their defensemen. Jenner's been good in the face-off circle, really like Nikitin's  game on the back end today, and Derick Brassard is dishing out the sauce to line mates Umberger and Atkinson.

11:00 A.M.:  As the scrimmage continues, here are a few pictures this morning's practice:

10:50 A.M.:
One new line combination today is Boone Jenner centering Matt Calvert and Jared Boll.

10:44 A.M.: The scrimmage is under way! Bobrovsky in net for White, Mason for Blue. Good shift right off the bat for the Dubinsky-Anisimov-Dorsett line, who went head-to-head against the Brassard unit. Johansen still centering Foligno and Prospal this morning.

10:30 A.M.: Todd Richards has started practice with some "off the rush" drills before the scrimmage. Just getting the legs going and making sure everyone's ready to go. Much like yesterday, we're seeing a lot of saves made by Sergei Bobrovsky.

10:25 A.M.: Players have hit the ice for Day 3 of practice here at Nationwide Arena. The team has been split up in two squads: Blue and White, and they will be scrimmaging here starting in a few minutes. Here are the rosters for each side:

BLUE: Boll, Johnson, Jenner, Savard, Moore, Calvert, Anisimov, Wisniewski, MacKenzie, Dorsett, Dubinsky

WHITE: Brassard, Umberger, Atkinson, Tyutin, Nikitin, Letestu, Prospal, Foligno, Erixon, Johansen, Aucoin, Gillies

10:00 A.M.: Welcome back to our LIVE blog on BlueJackets.com for the third day of Blue Jackets Training Camp presented by OhioHealth! The team is scheduled to hit the ice at Nationwide Arena in the next 30 minutes, and we'll have all the updates from practice as they happen.

To recap yesterday: the lines were jumbled a little bit, with Ryan Johansen moving up to center Nick Foligno and Vinny Prospal. Also, Derek MacKenzie moved back to center between Matt Calvert and Jared Boll. Boone Jenner skated between Colton Gillies and Mark Letestu for most of yesterday's practice.

The defense pairings saw Tim Erixon and Adrian Aucoin skate together, and John Moore paired up with David Savard. Other pairings stayed intact (Jack Johnson-James Wisniewski and Fedor Tyutin-Nikita Nikitin).
