NHL Draft Profile: Max Domi

The last name alone gets your attention, but there's a lot more to Max Domi’s game than just his hockey pedigree.

His on-ice play has drawn eyeballs than his last name as of late, and that's good news for the son of former NHL agitator Tie Domi, who enjoyed a 16-year career as one of the toughest enforcers in the NHL. Max and his London Knights teammates came tantalizingly close to a Memorial Cup title for the second year in a row, but bowed out in the semifinal to eventual champion Halifax.

Perhaps you've seen this highlight-reel, between-the-legs saucer pass to line mate Bo Horvat that was crowned as the No. 1 play on SportsCenter's (ESPN) nightly countdown:

That pass was just one of several exciting, high-end plays from Domi's decorated junior hockey career. A versatile player, can Domi dominate a game at center or on the wing. His 87 points this season put him in the top 10 in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) scoring list, and his dynamic offensive abilities lead to goals and drawn penalties.

Domi is consistently one of the hardest workers on the ice, winning nearly every face-off circle match up and one-on-one battle every game. When he crashes the net, he is a force to be reckoned with.

Though he's one of the smaller players in the 2013 draft at 5-foot-9, Domi’s play lures larger defensemen out of position, leading to key scoring chances and opportunities for creative passes. His puck handling ability allows him to dangle defensemen and create offense that otherwise wouldn't seem possible, and a keen hockey sense makes him an excellent playmaker.

While he tends to skate in quick bursts rather than racing down the length of the ice, he’s quick to stop and start and dance around opposing players. In the defensive zone, he sometimes gets out of position and makes dramatic plays, which can occasionally get Domi and his team into trouble.

Because of his work ethic, Domi is expected to develop into a front-line forward in the NHL. For the Blue Jackets, they're looking at a young player who brings elements of speed, intelligence and competitiveness in a potential package as a draft pick.

If he works on his defensive play and keeps his confidence in check, Domi will have no problem wreaking havoc in the NHL for years to come.
