When it came time to make 16th pick in the 2012 NHL Draft, the Washington Capitals were on the clock.

The Capitals, in the first of two consecutive picks out of the OHL, selected Tom Wilson, following his second season with the Plymouth Whalers. Wilson, a right wing, was a U17 gold-medalist for Team Canada in 2011, was voted as the ‘Best Body Checker’ in the OHL’s 2012 Western Conference Coaches Poll and was a runner up for the ‘Hardest Worker’ award.

After being drafted in 2012, he was returned to his junior club - and he went on to double his point totals from 27 (nine goals, 18 assists) to 58 (23 goals, 35 assists).

Wilson was brought up for three games during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but failed to register a point in his time there before the Capitals’ first round exit. He then made the NHL roster out of training camp in 2013-14 and appeared in all of the team’s 82 regular season games.

During this past season, Wilson tallied three goals along with seven assists and dropped the gloves 14 times. He scored his first career goal against the Islanders and Evgeni Nabokov in November, and he battled Lance Bouma of the Calgary Flames during his first NHL fight.
