With the 16th overall pick in 2014 NHL Draft, the Columbus Blue Jackets selected center Sonny Milano from the USA National Team Development Program.

The six-foot, 185-pound 18-year old has drawn praise for his strong hands and ability to maintain possession of the puck. Milano’s quick first step allows him to create space and set up scoring chances for himself and his teammates.

Scouts have also praised Milano’s natural instinct to score: a trait that cannot be coached.

Milano has spent two seasons in the USNTDP where he was a member of the U-17 squad that took bronze at the 2012-13 World Hockey Championships. The following year, his U-18 squad took gold at the World Junior Championships. His four goals at the 2012-13 tournament lead the team.

Coming into the draft, Central Scouting and ISS Hockey ranked Milano as the 16th overall prospect.

Milano has committed to play hockey at NCAA powerhouse Boston College next year.
