COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Cam Atkinson to a two-year contract extension through the 2014-15 National Hockey League season, club General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.
“Cam is a highly skilled and exciting player who continues to evolve in all aspects of his game,” said Kekalainen. “He battles hard every night, has a great determination to succeed and we are pleased that he will continue to be an important member of our hockey club.”
Atkinson, 23, has tallied eight goals and eight assists for 16 points with four penalty minutes and a +7 plus/minus rating in 42 games played this season. Originally selected by Columbus with its eighth pick, 157th overall, at the 2008 NHL Draft, he signed a two-year entry level contract with the club on Mar. 27, 2011. The 5-7, 172-pound right wing has recorded 15-15-30 and 18 penalty minutes in 61 career appearances with the Blue Jackets.
A native of Riverside, Connecticut, Atkinson spent three seasons at Boston College (Hockey East), registering 68-56-124 in 117 games played from 2008-11. He won a national title with BC in 2010 and was named to the NCAA’s Frozen Four All-Tournament Team after netting one goal in the Eagles’ semifinal matchup and scoring twice in the championship game. Atkinson has also appeared in 89 career American Hockey League contests with the Springfield Falcons, registering 49-38-87 with a cumulative +14 plus/minus rating.
The Blue Jackets return to action on Saturday when they battle the Nashville Predators at 7 p.m. at Nationwide Arena in the final game of the regular season for both teams.
