Post-Game Notes
February 13, 2009 – Nationwide Arena

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock

Commenting on tonight's game…

"We got in trouble, trying to do too much with the puck. When we tried to play East-West, we got in trouble."

Commenting on the play of the team…
"We need to play better and if we play better we're going to win a lot more games. Other people are stepping up –that's really important for us. We are having other people contribute for us to win hockey games. The nice part is we can win hockey games without scoring from (Rick) Nash and (Kristian) Huselius."

Commenting on the Red Wings power play…
"Our neutral zone checking is better than it's ever been against them. The penalty killing was a big reason we were able to keep them under 40 shots and no goals on their power play."

Commenting on center Jason Williams…
"He one of those few guys that doesn't need a lot of chances to score. He's a shooter. If you give him time – I knew he was going to score – he's going to finish. He's a smart player."

Commenting on goaltender Steve Mason's first game back…
"He was good tonight – solid. We've been lucky the last little while with big saves at the right time. (Dan) LaCosta was good (the last two games) and Mason was good (tonight). It's reassuring (to have Mason back there at the end of a game like this)."

Columbus Blue Jackets Player Quotes

Blue Jackets Goaltender Steve Mason

Commenting on returning to the lineup after missing the previous three games due to injury…

"I felt great. There wasn't even points in the game I was tired. That was pretty positive."

Commenting on playing the Red Wings his first game back…
"There couldn't be a better team to jump back into it. Detroit's a great team and we put forth a great effort and obviously it paid dividends in the end."

Blue Jackets Center Jason Williams
Commenting on scoring the game-winner against his former team…

"It's always nice to score against your former team. For that to be the game-winner, that's a little icing on the cake I guess. But that was a good, solid effort by everybody. Our penalty killing did a great job. Mason made some huge saves at the end of the game. Every point is crucial right now and I think we showed tonight that we were hungry."

Commenting on getting two points against a top team…
"Anytime you're up against teams like San Jose or Detroit, you want to make sure that you're up for the test. It's a confidence builder for our team."

Blue Jackets Right Wing Jakub Voracek

Commenting on tonight's game…

"We stayed with the game plan all night long and we played our game. I do have to say that Detroit played well in back-to-back games … We played great defense on them and that's how we won the game."

Commenting on the game plan…
"Our game plan all season long has been to play the puck deep, not make too many turnovers and just play simple."

Detroit Red Wings Player Quotes

Detroit Red Wings Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom

Commenting on tonight's game…

"We played real well defensively, I thought. As the game went on we got more chances especially in the third period, but they scored the last goal and in the end that was enough. I thought the team really battled hard though."

Commenting on Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason
"He played really well, Hank (Henrik Zetterberg) had a great chance when we had the six guys out there, but he did a good job of denying him. They played real well in front of him, too, knocking the puck away. They didn't give us much to shoot at."

Detroit Red Wings Right Wing Mikael Samuelsson
Commenting on the Blue Jackets…

"They're playing really good right now. They did a good job of keeping us on the outside and they're good internally, too, whether it's the forwards or the "D" stepping in front of a lot of shots. They're playing really well in front of the net."

Commenting on scoring chances…
"I think we had some chances. There was some rebounds right out in front of him sometimes, but we couldn't get the puck to go in. But give the credit to them, they did a good job defensively all night."

Detroit Red Wings Goalie Chris Osgood
Commenting on tonight's game…

"We played good, I think as the game went on we played better and better. They had some good turnovers that led to some fast breaks, but that happens sometimes. I'm disappointed that I let some of those through, but you have to forget about it and keep playing."
