Feb. 16, 2009 - Post Game Quotes

Post-Game Notes
Dallas Stars (3) at Columbus Blue Jackets (2) SO

February 16, 2009 – Nationwide Arena

Columbus Blue Jackets Head Coach Ken Hitchcock
Commenting on the second period...
"The second period was the best period we've played here all year in this building. We didn't like our start. We had a real chance to go for the throat (in the second period, third period and overtime). We really had them on their heels."

Commenting on outplaying teams and not being rewarded with two points…
"We've had games like this, where we've outplayed the team and not won (the game). That's the nature of the game. When we went up 2-1 and had all those chances, we left the game out there. We didn't bury those chances and that allowed them to score that goal at the end of the power play."

Commenting on the forwards...
"We have to get help from people up front. We have to get more from our people up front if we expect to go to the next level. We don't have enough consistency from some people. We need to address some of our forwards' play, to find a way to help them get more from their own game. If we're going to be a playoff team… we need to get more from some people there. If we do we’re going to be in really good shape."

Commenting on goaltender Steve Mason
"He was good – kept that door shut. He was real good. Both goalies were really good today."

Commenting on the power play...
"We didn't like our power play in the third period because we were too casual with the puck. It's was our casualness with the puck. Four-on-three's are funny, you think you have all day and you don't."

Commenting on center R.J. Umberger
"I think he's trying to carry the team on his back right now. He's doing a hell of a job. He's playing at great speed, he's comfortable at center ice and he's winning key face-offs. He's an absolute horse out there."

Blue Jackets Right Wing Derek Dorsett

Commenting on the start of the game…

"Starts are important especially this time of the year. Teams are looking for points and we got to take advantage of our opportunities. Well, we got off to a slow start and had some breakdowns, but I think we did a great job coming out in the second."

Blue Jackets Center R.J. Umberger

Commenting on the Stars' goal that tied the game 2-2…

"I'm not really sure what happened, I know somebody hit the puck off the boards and I was yelling at Juice (Kristian Huselius) because I saw the trailer and it was one of those situations that I didn't want to be the last guy back and I tried to lay down a block, but I went down too early and it was just a bang bang play that was a killer."

Commenting on his chance in overtime…
"I went around and cut it too deep and hit my right shoulder off the post and knocked myself off the puck. After I passed the first post I tried to tuck it in and I went too tight and hit myself on the post and the puck got away from me, but yeah I'll be thinking about that play all night."

Blue Jackets Defensemen Mike Commodore

Commenting on tonight's game…
"I think we played pretty well, it would have been nice to cash in that power play especially the one in overtime, we had a lot of opportunities on the power plays and just couldn't put them in. It is nice to get the point, it would have been nice to get two but at least we did get something out of this game."

Commenting on Stars goaltender Marty Turco…
"We had some great opportunities and missed but he did make a lot of good saves. But he is a good goalie and turned it up tonight. I'm not really sure exactly what he did but he's a great goalie that's been around for a long time and he was doing enough to stop our pucks."

Dallas Stars Head Coach Dave Tippett
Commenting on tonight's game…

"I thought the first period and third period we did some good things. The second period we were behind it a little bit. They threw some pucks at the net. A lot of outside stuff that just led to a lot of scrambles, but give our guys credit, they hung in there. We lost (Brad) Richards out of the game, and our guys hung in there. We killed some crucial penalties at the end and found a way to get two points. That’s what we came here for."

Commenting on the playoff race…
"I guarantee you we're going to come down to that last week (in the regular season) and you're going to be thinking about points that you could have had."

Dallas Stars Player Quotes

Dallas Stars Goaltender Marty Turco

Commenting on facing 43 shots…

"When you don't have time off and you're seeing a lot of rubber, it's kind of neat to play mind games to stay in it. With that being said, I don't feel like I need it. It's not something I look forward to, but when you're in the middle of it, you try to have the mentality of whatever it takes for the team, whatever comes your way, whether it's one or 100, just be ready and do your job. We certainly didn't play our best game tonight, at all, but we showed a little bit of character in the third period, and played a lot better. We got the two points, and, at the end of the day, that's really what matters most. If we can learn a lot from this game and play better, it'll be a good thing for us."

Commenting on the playoff race…

"This race has a chance of being the all-time tightest. It is right now. You look at five through 15 (in the standings), everybody has a sniff. The teams that can focus on themselves and play well down the stretch, get their special teams rocking and get good goaltending, those teams are going to have the best chance (at making the playoffs)."

Dallas Stars Left Wing Loui Eriksson

Commenting on goaltender Marty Turco…

"Turcs (Marty Turco) was great today. He saved 41 shots today. He's been amazing. To hold the three shots in the shootout, too, that's what we want from him, and he's been doing it. He’s been incredible."

Commenting on tonight's game…
"They out shot us pretty bad in the second, but still we got it to 2-2 there and tied it. The third period, both teams had some chances, and we finally won the game. It's two huge points, again, to take."
