MONTREAL, QUEBEC – The Columbus Blue Jackets selected Chicago Steel defenseman John Moore with the 21st overall pick in the first round of the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft, club General Manager Scott Howson announced Friday, June 26. The Entry Draft is being held at Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec.

The Blue Jackets entered the night with the 16th overall pick, but traded that pick, along with their third round pick, 77th overall, to the New York Islanders in exchange for the Islanders first round (26th overall), second round (37th), third round (62nd) and fourth round (92nd) picks. Columbus then traded the 26th pick and 37th pick to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for the 21st overall pick to select Moore.

Moore, 18, scored 14 goals and added 25 assists for 39 points and 50 penalty minutes in 57 games with Chicago of the United States Hockey League during the 2008-09 season. He was named the USHL Defenseman of the Year and ranked fourth among league defensemen in scoring. "We are very excited to add John Moore to the organization," said Howson. "He is an outstanding skater that moves the puck well and he will add to the skill level on our back end."

The Winnetka, Illinois native won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2008 World Junior “A” Challenge and had 0-2-2 in five games. For his USHL career, he has collected 18-36-54 and 76 penalty minutes in 113 games. Moore has committed to attend Colorado College in the fall of 2009.
