Blue Jackets Claim Defenseman Andy Delmore Off Waivers From Detroit
COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed defenseman Andy Delmore off waivers from the Detroit Red Wings, club President and General Manager Doug MacLean announced today. The club also re-assigned right wings Steven Goertzen and Brandon Sudgen to the Syracuse Crunch, Columbus' American Hockey League affiliate, and assigned goaltender Martin Prusek to Syracuse on a conditioning assignment.
Delmore, 28, has appeared in 276 career National Hockey League games, tallying 43-58-101 and 103 penalty minutes with the Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators and Buffalo Sabres. He spent the 2003-04 season with the Sabres, tallying 2-5-7 and 29 penalty minutes in 37 games. In 2002-03, he registered 18-15-34 in 71 games with Nashville, leading all NHL defensemen in goals (tied) and power play goals (14). In 2001-02, he notched a career-high 16-22-38 in 73 games with the Predators to give him 34-38-72 in 144 games between 2001-03, which ranked second among NHL defensemen. Last year, he played for Mannheim in Germany and notched 7-16-23 and 59 penalty minutes in 50 games.
A native of LaSalle, Ontario, Delmore signed with the Flyers in 1997 following a four-year stint with North Bay and Sarnia of the Ontario Hockey League. He appeared in 239 career OHL games from 1993-97 with 48-132-180 and 165 penalty minutes. He combined for 39-98-137 and 84 penalty minutes in his final two seasons with Sarnia, including a career-high 18-60-78 in 63 games in 1996-97 when he earned OHL First Team All-Star honors.
Columbus begins its fifth NHL campaign on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against the Washington Capitals at the MCI Center. The Blue Jackets play their home opener on, October 7 against the defending Western Conference champion Calgary Flames. Game time at Nationwide Arena is 7 p.m. Both games will be televised live on FSN Ohio beginning at 6:30 p.m. with IceBreaker, a 30-minute pre-game show.
