Newcomers Berard and Chimera Lead Jackets Over Blackhawks, 3-2
Former Blackhawk Berard Tallies Goal and Assist; Chimera Scores In Jackets' Debut
Chimera, obtained from Phoenix on Saturday, scored in his first game as a Blue Jacket, giving Columbus an early 1-0 lead. Manny Malhotra and Trevor Letowski assisted on the play to put the Jackets on the board.
Chicago's Pavel Vorobiev knotted the score off an assist from Tyler Arnason at 15:19 of the first period. Columbus reclaimed the lead when Berard scored his first as a Blue Jacket on the power play on assists from David Vyborny and Nikolai Zherdev. Jody Shelley scored just two and a half minutes later off an assist from Berard and Jaroslav Balastik, the first NHL point of Balastik's career, to put Columbus up 3-1.
Vorobiev tallied his second goal of the evening to cut the Columbus lead to one, lighting the lamp at 5:32 of the third. Columbus goalie Marc Denis stopped 15-of-16 shots in the third period, finishing with 30 saves on the evening to hold the one goal lead and earn his first victory of 2005.
Chicago out-shot the Jackets, 32-27, and Columbus finished 1-of-4 on the power play while stopping 7-of-8 Chicago man advantages.
