Blue Jackets Weekly Report: New Look Blue Jackets Head West For Three Games In California
Following Sunday's win at Chicago, Columbus visits San Jose (10/12, 10:30 p.m.), Anaheim (10/14, 10:30 p.m.) and Los Angeles (10/16, 8 p.m.) this week. All games will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net Ohio and WBNS 1460 THE FAN and WWCD-FM 101.1, except for Wednesday's game in San Jose, which will not be televised.
THIS WEEK IN BLUE JACKETS HOCKEY: The Columbus Blue Jackets (1-2-0, 2 pts./3rd-Tied, Central Division) continue a four-game road trip with three contests in the state of California this week. On Wednesday, the Blue Jackets visit the San Jose Sharks before heading to Southern California for games against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on Friday and Los Angeles Kings on Sunday. The week will conclude a season-opening stretch that has the club playing five of its first six games on the road, preceding a season-high five-game homestand from October 21-28.

JACKETS ORCHESTRATE FIVE PLAYER TRADE: The Blue Jackets traded LW Geoff Sanderson (the club's all-time leader in goals and points with 88-80-168 in 261 games) and RW Tim Jackman (the club's second pick, 38th overall, in the 2001 Entry Draft) to Phoenix for LW Jason Chimera, D Cale Hulse and C Mike Rupp on October 8. Chimera, 26, has 20-17-37 and 95 penalty minutes in 132 NHL games, including a career-high 14-9-23 in 66 games as a rookie with Edmonton in 2002-03. Hulse, 31, has logged 581 career NHL games with 16-75-91 and 939 penalty minutes. He notched career highs with 5-22- 27 and 169 penalty minutes in 79 games with Calgary in 1997-98. Rupp, 25, has tallied 11-9-20 and 68 penalty minutes in 85 career games. As a rookie with the New Jersey Devils in 2002-03, he had 1-3-4 in four games during the Stanley Cup Finals and scored the Cup-clinching goal in game 7 vs. Anaheim. All three players made their Blue Jackets debuts at Chicago on October 9 with Chimera scoring the club's first goal in a 3-2 win.
THIRD OHIO-BORN PLAYER JOINS BLUE JACKETS ORGANIZATION: With the acquisition of C Mike Rupp from Phoenix, the Blue Jackets now have three players who were born and raised in the Cleveland-area on the organizational roster. Rupp is a native of Cleveland who played one season at Lakewood St. Edward High School in 1996-97 before embarking on his major junior career. He joins C/LW Dan Fritsche, a native of Parma and the first-Ohio born player drafted by the Blue Jackets (Second round in 2003), and C Ben Simon, who hails from Shaker Heights and is currently with Columbus's AHL affiliate in Syracuse.
NHL FIRSTS FOR THREE ROOKIES: Three Blue Jackets rookies registered NHL "firsts" during last week's action. C/LW Dan Fritsche registered the first two-goal game of his NHL career on October 5 at Washington and became the fourth rookie in team history to score two goals in a game (Nikolai Zherdev, 2003-04; Rick Nash, 2002-03; Serge Aubin, 2000-01)… C Gilbert Brule picked up his first point with an assist in his NHL debut on October 5 at Washington… RW Jaroslav Balastik picked up his first career point with an assist on October 9 at Chicago.
NEWS & NOTES: RW Nikolai Zherdev (0-2-2) and RW Trevor Letowski (1-1-2) were the only Blue Jackets who have picked up points in two of last week's three games and both are riding two-game point streaks… Thirteen different players registered points in the first three games… D Adam Foote played in his 800th career game on October 5 at Washington… RW David Vyborny has played in a team-record 164 consecutive games dating back to Oct. 17, 2002 (at St. Louis)… D Bryan Berard tallied 1-1-2 vs. his former Chicago teammates on October 10 to register his first points as a Blue Jacket... Columbus picked up its first road win in its second game (3-2 at Chicago on October 10). In 2003-04, the club's first road win also came at Chicago, but it didn't come until the 15th road game on December 26… The 18,136 in attendance for the Blue Jackets' home-opener on October 7 vs. Calgary marked the 107th sellout crowd in 165 games at Nationwide Arena since Columbus joined the NHL in 2000.
