PLATT NETS THREE: Rookie center Geoff Platt continued his impressive month, recording a hat trick in the Crunch's 6-3 victory over the Rochester Americans on Saturday night. Platt enters this week with a team-high six goals, which ranks second among AHL rookies (Houston's Roman Voloshenko - 7). A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Platt was signed as a free agent by Syracuse on Sept. 23. He appeared in 68 games for Erie (OHL) last season, recording 45 goals, 34 assists and 84 penalty minutes.
POWER PLAY ALL CHARGED UP: The Syracuse Crunch's power play unit returned to form on Saturday night, converting on 3 of 11 opportunities after beginning the season 2 of 40 with the man advantage.
AYERS SIGNS PTO: The Crunch announced today the signing of goaltender Mike Ayers to a professional tryout contract. Ayers has appeared in two games with the Crunch's ECHL affiliate Dayton, posting a 1-1-0 record with a 4.01 goals against average. A native of Hingham, MA, Ayers split time last season with Grand Rapids, Dayton and Cincinnati). He played four seasons at the University of New Hampshire before turning pro. Ayers was originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the sixth round, 177th overall, un the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.
A NIGHT OF FIRSTS: In addition to Geoff Platt's first professional hat trick, right wing Jaroslav Balastik netted his first North American goal and defenseman Marc Methot recorded his first professional assist on Saturday night against the Rochester Americans.
THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS
HAMILTON (MONTREAL CANADIENS): Syracuse plays a home-and-home series with Hamilton on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at Copps Coliseum and Friday, Oct. 28 at the War Memorial at Oncenter for the first and second of eight regular season meetings. Center Corey Locke (2g, 4a) leads the Bulldogs with six points. Goaltender Olivier Michaud has appeared in four games for Hamilton, posting a 1-3-0 record, a 2.78 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. Lifetime, the Crunch are 24-29-11 against the Bulldogs.
WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON (PITTSBURGH PENGUINS): On Saturday, Oct. 29, Syracuse travels to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for the second of eight regular season meetings. Center Matt Hussey leads both teams in head-to-head scoring with three points (1g, 3a). Aaron Johnson (1g) Ben Simon (1a) and Joakim Lindstrom (1a) each have a point for Syracuse against the Penguins this season. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury posted the win for the Penguins, recording 32 saves. Pascal Leclaire made 26 saves in the loss. Lifetime, the Crunch are 29-19-7 against the Penguins.
CRUNCHABLES: Goaltender Andrew Penner posted his first victory of the season in the Crunch's 6-3 defeat of Rochester on Saturdayâ€¦ Right wing Steven Goertzen made his NHL debut on Oct.20 vs. San Joseâ€¦ Defenseman Jamie Pushor appeared in his 300th career AHL contest on Saturday night against Rochester.
