WEEK IN REVIEW: Nov. 1– at Edmonton 5, Blue Jackets 1: Ales Hemsky scored two goals and the Oilers broke open a tight game with three goals in a 7:18 span late in the second and early in the third periods to earn the win. Rostislav Klesla scored in his season debut for Columbus, which was outshot 35 to 24 in the game. Jussi Markkanen made 23 saves to earn the win, while Marc Denis stopped 30 shots in net for Columbus… Nov. 3 – at Calgary 2, Blue Jackets 1: Columbus led 1-0 through two periods on a goal by David Vyborny, before the Flames tied the game at 1-1 at 3:09 of the third on a goal by Steven Reinprecht. Marcus Nilson's goal at the 10:36 mark was the game-winner. Denis made 29 saves for the Jackets, who killed off all seven Calgary power play attempts… Nov. 4 – at Vancouver 5, Blue Jackets 3: Nikolai Zherdev tallied 2-1-3 to lead the Blue Jackets, but Vancouver used two power play goals and an empty net tally to remain unbeaten at home. David Vyborny added 1-1-2 and Manny Malhotra chipped in 0-2-2 for the Jackets, while Anson Carted led the Canucks with 1-2-3.
BLUE JACKETS KICK OFF BOOK JACKETS: In 2001, the team established the Blue Jackets Book Jackets program. This educational program uses Blue Jackets celebrities as role models for literacy to help encourage students in grades K-8 to spend more of their free time reading. The program rewards students through incentives based on time children spend reading. Since introducing the program, nearly 7,500 central Ohio students have participated in the Book Jackets program, combining for close to 13,000,000 minutes read. On Monday, Stinger, Manny Malhotra, and Trevor Letowski visited Buckeye Woods Elementary School; Jody Shelley and FSN Ohio Broadcasters Jeff Rimer and Brian Engblom visited St. Brendan's School; Luke Richardson and CBJ Radio Broadcaster George Matthews attended New Albany Middle School, while Stinger and Matthews finished up the day at Pickerington Elementary School.
BERARD RUNS POINT SCORING STREAK TO TEAM SEASON-HIGH SEVEN GAMES: D Bryan Berard has picked up a point in seven-straight games (1-6-7) since Oct. 24 vs. Detroit, which is the longest streak by a Blue Jacket this season. In addition, he has tied Ray Whitney's franchise record for consecutive games with an assist as he has collected a helper in his last six games. Whitney picked up 0-7-7 in six games from Jan. 6-13, 2003. Berard currently leads the Blue Jackets with 3-9-12 in 15 games and is tied for eighth among NHL defensemen in scoring.
VYBORNY ALSO STREAKING; NOW BLUE JACKETS CAREER POINT LEADER: After being held to 0-1-1 in his first six games, RW David Vyborny has tallied 4-4-8 in his last nine outings and is currently riding a five-game point streak (3-2-5) with three goals in his last four games. He has also appeared in all 15 games this season, extending his franchise record for consecutive games played to 176 dating back to Oct. 17, 2002. With his goal at Calgary on Nov. 3, Vyborny took over the franchise scoring lead from Geoff Sanderson (88-80-168). In 330 games, he has registered 72-99-171 and is the Blue Jackets' all-time leader in games, points and assists, while ranking second in goals (Sanderson – 88).
ZHERDEV LIGHTS THE LAMP: RW Nikolai Zherdev has picked up 2-2-4 in his last three games after tallying 1-2-3 in his first 11 outings. He racked up 2-1-3 at Vancouver on Nov. 4 to give him 4-3-7 in two career games at General Motors Place. In his first, he notched 2-2-4 on Mar. 21, 2004.
FIRST COLLEGE NIGHT PROMOTION SLATED FOR WEDNESDAY: The Blue Jackets, CD101, Buffalo Wild Wings, and the Arena Grand Theatre present the first College Night of the season on Wednesday Nov. 9. Packages are $23 and include one ticket to the Blue Jackets game vs. St. Louis, one ticket to a post-game screening of "Old School" at the Arena Grand Theatre, six wings from Buffalo Wild Wings, and a CBJ College Night t-shirt.
SALUTE TO ARMED FORCES, LIMA COMPANY SLATED FOR VETERAN'S DAY GAME FRIDAY NIGHT: Please join the Blue Jackets in honoring our armed forces when the Blue Jackets host the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 11 at 7pm. This Veterans Day Celebration will include a special acknowledgement of Columbus-based Lima Company of the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment (3/25). A special pre-game ceremony is planned and members of Lima Company will also be participating in intermission activities. Fans can show their support for the troops in attendance and those currently serving by signing the large banner that will be displayed on the Bud Light Terrace area of the main concourse.
GIANT EAGLE TURKEY SHOOT SET FOR SUNDAY: The Columbus Blue Jackets and Giant Eagle are teaming up to help provide your holiday meal. Following the Nov. 13 game vs. the Los Angeles Kings, fans will be invited onto the ice for a chance to win a $10 gift card from Giant Eagle.
