U.S. Women's National Team Wins First Game in Torino
Team USA Defeats Finland In Opening Game of Pre-Olympic Test Event
TORINO, Italy - The U.S. Women's National Team defeated Finland, 1-0 in the opening game of the pre-Olympic Test Event in Torino, Italy, on Monday. The team will return to action on Wednesday against Sweden.
Natalie Darwitz (Eagan, Minn.) opened the scoring seven minutes into the game when she lifted a shot off the far post. Shari Vogt (Richmond, Minn.) stopped 13 shots and earned the shutout.
Team USA will play at least three games in the Test Event, facing Finland, Sweden and Canada. A final game between the tournament's top teams will take place on Saturday.
The USA and Finland were the first teams to skate in competition on the new ice at Torino's Palasport Olimpico, which was constructed for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. The venue will host multiple games between the womenÂ¹s national teams from Italy, France, Sweden, Finland and the USA as well as menÂ¹s competition between the teams from France, Austria, Italy and Slovenia.
Notes: Team USA will return to its U.S. training schedule when it resumes the Hilton Family Skate to 2006 Tour in Columbus, Ohio, on Nov. 27 against Canada.
