World Junior Championships Continue

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – In World Junior Championship action yesterday, CBJ prospect Kris Russell and Team Canada held on for a 4-3 win over Switzerland, Ohio native Tom Fritsche and the United States defeated Finland, 6-5 and CBJ prospect Petr Pohl and the Czech Republic lost to Sweden, 3-2. Russia defeated Slovakia to round out WJC action on Wednesday night.

The U.S. rallied from an early two-goal deficit and held on for a 6-5 victory over Finland in preliminary round action at the 2006 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship. Team USA is now 2-0 in the tournament.

Tom Fritsche (Parma, Ohio) younger brother of Dan Fritsche and current Ohio State Buckeye, was the U.S. Player of the Game, with a goal and an assist to lead USA to the win.

Canada, meanwhile, had to hold off Switzerland for a 4-3 win at the world junior hockey championship Wednesday.

Canada's Dustin Boyd scored his third goal of the tournament and had an assist. Russell finished the game scoreless with one shot on goal and was on the ice for Team Canada's first goal of the game, a power-play goal by Steve Downie that evened the game at one.

The Czech Republic could not overcome a 3-0 deficit, falling to Sweden 3-2. Goals by Vladimir Sobotka and Tomas Kana made the game interesting but the Czech Republic could not tally the equalizer.

Pohl, playing for the Czech Republic, led his squad with three shots on goal, finishing scoreless with an even rating.

In the last contest of the day, Russia used five first-period goals, four of which were scored on the power play to easily defeat Slovakia, 6-2. Alexei Emelin led Russia with 1-2-3.
