Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Awards Nearly $270,000 In Grants
Columbus Childrenâ€™s Hospital Foundation ($60,000) – Grant funds oncology services which benefit the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation Family Resource Room, the Sibling Support Program and the new Stinger Bravery Beads program along with continued support of the Blue Jackets Bike Helmet Safety Program.
Hope Street Kids ($25,000) –Â Grant funds pediatric cancer research.
Cypress Ridge Farm ($12,500) –Â Grant helps to create a 14,000 square foot activity court that can be used for a variety of games to help develop self-identity and self-confidence for critically ill children.
Make A Wish Foundation ($10,000) – Grant provides title sponsorship of the annual Walk For Wishes which will be held on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006.
Kids N Kamp ($5,000) – Grant funds the Emergency Resource Program which provides financial assistance to cover medical bills and other basic needs for families who have a child with cancer.
Skate For Hope ($5,000) – Grant provides premier sponsorship for Skate for Hope, a fund-raiser for breast cancer research, which will be held on June 24, 2006 at the Dispatch Ice Haus.
Adventures For Wish Kids ($1,500) – Grant funds purchase of toys, crafts and movies to distribute to young patients who are being treated for life-threatening illnesses at Columbus Children's Hospital.
CHILDRENâ€™S HEALTH & SAFETY
OhioHealth Foundation – Wellness on Wheels ($20,000) – Grant funds OhioHealth Wellness on Wheels mobile health unit which provides free high-quality healthcare including physicals and acute health care services for students in the Columbus Public Schools.
Big Brothers Big Sisters ($5,000) – Grant offers financial support for BBBS Alumni Mini-Grant Awards, The Alumni Association and Big Brother Recruitment Campaign.
Boys and Girls Clubs of Columbus ($5,000) –Â Grant supports the Fair Avenue Elementary Boys and Girls Club.
CAPACITY ($5,000) – Grant supports CAPACITY Youth Arts Program which provides a wide variety of arts opportunities to young people from Columbusâ€™ core urban neighborhoods.
Charity Newsies ($5,000) - Grant will assist the programâ€™s mission to provide clothing for needy school children in Franklin County.
Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption ($5,000) – Grant supports Wendy's Wonderful Kids.
Tim Hortonâ€™s Childrenâ€™s Foundation ($5,000) – Grant funds scholarships for Franklin County children to attend the Tim Horton's Camp Kentahten in Kentcuky.
Columbus Dispatch – Newspapers in Education ($13,000) – Grant helps fund NIE school curriculum which is utilized in nearly 1,000 Central Ohio classrooms.
The Childhood League Center ($10,000) – Grant makes possible the purchase of new computers, an LCD projector and the other accompanying hardware for use in classrooms and by staff psychologists.
American Cancer Society ($5,000) – Grant gives college scholarships for pediatric cancer survivors.
I KNOW I CAN ($5,000) – Grant provides financial assistance for four Columbus Public School students with need-based grants for college.
School Hockey Scholarships ($9,000) – Three scholarships were awarded to area high school hockey players that best exemplify academic excellence and participate in extracurricular activities and community service work. This year, Lamarr Holland (St. Charles), Matthew Kirstein (Dublin Coffman) and Ian Hasson (St. Charles) each received a $3,000 scholarship.
Saints Drumline ($2,000) – Grant assists with start-up costs for the Saints Drumline beginners unit and makes possible scholarships for kids to participate in the program.
D.A.R.E. ($1,000) – Grant funds program to train local police officers to deliver D.A.R.E. message to students in Central Ohio schools.
YOUTH & AMATEUR HOCKEY
Columbus Ice Hockey Club ($10,000) – Grant assists with cost of ice time and transportation from the Parks/Recreation facilities for underprivileged youth interested in learning to skate and play hockey.
Ohio Junior Blue Jackets ($8,000) – Grant funds scholarships based on financial need for hockey players in this elite program.
Columbus Blue Jackets - Quebec PeeWee Team ($5,000) – Grant covers expense of transportation for the team's travel to Quebec for the prestigious annual tournament.
FlexxCoach ($5,000) – Grant covers cost of providing state-of-the-art coaching software to approximately 100 Central Ohio high school and youth hockey coaches.
ONN Broadcast ($5,000) – Grant assists with expense of producing ONN broadcast of the Ohio High School Hockey Championship.
Ohio Sled Hockey ($5,000) –Â Grant assists with purchase of new sleds and protective gear which enable mentally and physically challenged individuals to play sled hockey.
Westbrook Elementary (Brookville, OH) ($5,000) – Grant assists with purchase of an indoor synthetic skating surface for Physical Education classes in the district.
Youngstown Youth Hockey ($5,000) – Grant helps cover cost of ice time for the Phantom Girls Hockey Team.
Athens Youth Hockey Association ($3,000) – Grant helps cover costs of â€œplayershipsâ€? for new players and returning players as well as off-season coaching clinics.
Ohio Junior B Team ($2,000) – Grant allows for purchase of necessary equipment and also provides scholarships for players in financial need.
Columbus Sting (U10 Girls Hockey Team) ($1,500) – Grant offers financial assistance for young girls to be able to participate at this competitive level.
The selections, determined by the Foundationâ€™s Board of Directors, were based on the mission of the Foundation with funds awarded to associations that are in need of financial aid/assistance and meet various criteria established by the Foundation.
