Update From the World Championships: Sweden Wins Gold, Again!

Sweden shut out the defending champion Czech Republic, 4-0 Sunday to win the IIHF world hockey championship and complete a unique double three months after capturing Olympic gold.

Jesper Mattsson, Fredrik Emvall, Niklas Kronwall and veteran Jorgen Jonsson gave Sweden a 4-0 lead after the first two periods. Goalie Johan Holmqvist earned his second shutout in seven games, making 15 saves.

David Vyborny was held scoreless in the title game but scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period on Saturday to lead Czech Republic over Finland 3-1, to advance to the final.

It was the third goal and ninth point in the tournament for Vyborny, who was team Captain for the Czech Republic. Jaroslav Balastik also saw action for the Czech Republic, scoring 4-2-6 in nine games.

Sweden advanced to the final after defeating Team Canada, 5-4 on Saturday. Marc Denis and Alex Auld split duties for Canada, which faced 25 Swedish shots, with Auld replacing Denis after Sweden's fifth goal.

Denis finished the tournament posting a 2.51 GAA and a .911 SV%.

Niklas Kronwall, Jorgen Jonsson, Tony Martensson, Mikael Samuelsson and Jonas Nordquist scored for Sweden, while Michael Nylander had three assists. Kyle Calder, Mike Comrie, Sidney Crosby and Patrice Bergeron scored for Canada.

In the bronze medal game on Sunday, Tomi Kallio, Olli Jokinen, Riku Hahl, Antti Miettinen, and Jussi Jokinen scored for Finland, which defeated Canada, 5-0. Denis did not see appear in the game.

CBJ prospect goaltender Tomas Popperle, who was Columbus’ fifth pick, 131st overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, is also playing for the Czech Republic in the tournament, but but did not see any action.

Center Raffaele Sannitz, also a CBJ prospect, saw action for Switzerland but was eliminated in the qualifying rounds.
