The Teeter Totter Continues...

February 18

This has been one heckuva ride the past three games. The low of the Chicago loss, the high of the Detroit win and now the low of the 5-1 St. Louis loss... Simply put, the series of the unexpected has hit the CBJ. We should have a new sponsor the way things are going… Morton Salt… when it rains it pours!

If we look at the three keys to this game tonight, let one first state the question as the key… and then the answer will follow:

1. Replicate the effort and the defensive dominance like in Detroit?… Answer: Not even close, as the only effort noticeable with this team was the infusion of the Kid line… Brule, Brassard and Fritsche. The passing seams and the neutral zone fore-check was as porous as that cheese from Switzerland. One can ask the diminutive Andy MacDonald as he scored his 100th goal of his eight-year career. The goal was even assisted by goaltender Manny Legace. It was so quick in transition that Leclaire had no chance on the great move on the breakaway.

2. No weak link must continue with this team with constant scoring, puck control and solid special teams?… Answer: Well, let it be stated that the CBJ had a nice shorthanded goal by Nash (his fourth SHG of the season) was the all the offense could muster (19 shots)… the PP was 0-4 and the PK gave up three to the worst PP of the NHL… enough said.

3. Manny Legace has beat us both times this year and historically has owned us with now a 16-4-1 record, so the key is to find a way to beat the hot hand?… Answer: 19 shots does not quite cut it. Scoring opportunities were slim to none and one must give credit to the solid play of the STL defense. Not only did they do nice job of defending they were also credited with eight points on the night. Walker scored his first NHL goal, Brewer had four assists and Eric Johnson had a couple.

It is off to Toronto for the CBJ and it gives a few of us a chance to see family. Before I depart from this blog, let me say my father who listens to every game on the internet and as an 89-year old, is proficient enough to send emails every night. He had the line of the evening… "am I listening to the right station?"... he finished it in solid fashion by being the eternal optimist… "Come on boys, get with it."

Stay tuned as we head into the hockey hot bed of the NHL… Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.
