Guts and Glory... A Big Win in Vancouver
When you cage an animal that has lost some of its kin, it is not unusual for it to fight, claw and scratch its way if challenged. The CBJ are such a team after this past week, and with the loss of Jiri Novotny (his wife is expecting), the sickness that is circulating around the room and the traveling party, they clawed out a 3-2 OT win in Vancouver. The series ended tied with two wins apiece. The CBJ is now 7-3-1 in the past 11 road games.
The Canucks were 23-0-1 on the season, after goals by Shannon and Salo, when leading after two periods of play. The CBJ did not let up as they continued to out shoot Vancouver 33-23 for the night, but scoring three unanswered on goals by Murray (5th), Nash (34th) and Chimera (12th). Dick Tarnstrom added two assists in the win.
Give credit tonight to a gutsy and feisty crew with Fritsche leveling Kevin Bieksa in a one round bout and Tollefson keeping a stiff upper jaw on boxer and south paw Rick Rypien. The energy of these battles was contagious.
Malhotra had a great night in the face-off department going 18-7… the second best team in the league showed 58% success.
Rick Nash scored on a turnover by Willie Mitchell. He had a breakaway from his own blue line. It was ironic that in the afternoon, my brother Jim had mentioned that anytime there is a shootout, or a breakaway on Luongo, go to the glove side and success will follow… right on Jim!!
Congratulations to Todd Sharrock and his wife Krystal. She gave birth to Landry Richard, 6 lbs 10 oz and was 20 ½ in long.
It is always a nice treat for me to see several friends and family out on the west coast. My brother as before mentioned, is living in Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island with his wife Lynell; and two OSU teammates, Morris Nord and Greg Kostenko. They make an attempt to all come to the morning skate and to the game in the evening.
On to Edmonton, a 65 minute flight, a 35 minute bus ride and losing an hour will get the team in bed by 3 a.m. Up and at it again at Rexall Place for a 4 p.m. practice.
Stay tuned!... 69 points and three points out of the playoff hunt!
