A Shootout Heartbreaker

March 3

Playing in front of the 107th consecutive sellout at Rexall Place in Edmonton, the CBJ dominated territorially, shots on goal (38-29) and scoring opportunities but were denied the two points. Playing against the NHL's best shootout team, now 14-3, the only consolation was the one point.

Nash scored his 35th of the season and is now one point from tying a career high. Zherdev had two assists and now has 55 points on the year, setting a personal best. Chimera had five shots on goal, accounted for his 13th tally, but missed two breakaways that could have sealed the deal. Since his four-year deal, he has elevated the bar in his play and is a joy to watch and have around the team.

Dick Tarnstrom scored the game tying goal @17:21 of the third and has 2-5-7 in 10 games since the Curtis Glencross trade. The Sultan of Shootouts, Mathieu Garon has now stopped 30-32 shots in the shootout and has yet to lose, going 10-0. Those 14 extra points still leave the Oilers with 67 points, three behind the CBJ in the West, who are four points out of the 8th and final playoff spot.

What a sight at Rexall Place when we arrived in Edmonton for practice on the Saturday afternoon. They present their team "skills" competition and opened it up for all the fans. Sold out ($8.00 a ticket) and 500+ waiting outside, they put on the show with the fastest skater, hardest shot, etc. They had six players timed less than :14 seconds in the skating competition with Glencross setting an unofficial NHL record of 13.37 seconds… who would have known?

Geoff Sanderson the 35-year old, 17-year veteran came third at 13.83… he still has the wheels, but the hands are always the first to go!

Off to Calgary for a practice on the day off and the game on March 4th. That will conclude the 8-of-9 on the road and the CBJ have done an admirable job of going 7-3-2 in the last 12 road games. Let us hope it can continue and then get home to take care of our own house where we play 8-of-11 at the friendly confines of NWA.

Stay tuned - still in the hunt with 15 games to go!!
