Jekyll and Hyde!!.OK...Relax and Focus!!
March 8th, 2009
The CBJ’s have never been in this position before. The fans have never been in this position before. The broadcasters and support staff have never been in this position before. The highs are high and the lows are low. Every game has been a playoff game with all of us hanging on every shift, every goal for and every goal against. One simple mistake and fantastic play leaves all of us on the edge of our seats. Isn’t this just what we have been waiting for all these years? Jekyll and Hyde do not hold a candle to what is going on with the CBJ’s right now.
A real low in a 4-2 loss to the Nashville Predators was followed with a record setting 8-2 thrashing of the Detroit Red Wings. For all of us involved in these two games, it is a lesson in life to take these extraneous situations to heart and settle the emotions down. Relax. Take a breath. There are 16 games to be played and a lot of work to be done to stay above the “bar” for a possible playoff berth for the first time in franchise history.
The lesson at this time of year is to not look too far ahead. Do not get focused on “what will be if” until “what needs to be done” is accomplished. Like golf, if one is riding along making birdies with 6 holes to be played and one begins to think about “wow…if I keep this up I’ll shoot my best round ever!!!”….well…humility will hit you smack in the middle of the forehead when you all of a sudden you flounder with a couple of bad holes. Before you know it you have lost your composure and one finds it difficult to regain the momentum that was ingrained for the first 12 holes.
This is where the CBJ’s stand today. The task at hand for this team is to take each day with blinders around the eyes. Control the things that need to be addressed….remember that “Perfect Practice will Prepare for a Positive Performance.” Forgetting the possibilities of what will be and focusing on the daily tasks that are present. This is the proper way to manage the mind and the body. Control the things that can be controlled internally and externally by first of all self. Once that formula is in place, then follow the experiences of the coach and general manager who have been there before. They have tasted this a few times before…in them we trust.
No one will ever feel sorry if failures arise. Rely on the strengths that are within. Build on the want and the desire of team, community and fans. Playing within the confines of self and knowing the roles for the development of team on each given day is the task for the next 16 games. The road must become a safe haven for garnering a few points within the Division. The comfort at home must continue to prosper. The ride to this point has been fun. Let us not kid ourselves. This is what it is all about….yes it is!!
Stay tuned!! Take a breath and enjoy!!
