Columbia Gas Blue Jackets Hot Prospect Report (Dec. 9)
Jared Boll (Plymouth) - Boll posted 1-3-4 in four games last week and has now recorded 9-9-18 with 94 penalty minutes in 28 games this season. He ranks T-5th in the OHL in Penalty Minutes and T-12th in Rookie Points. Columbus' fourth pick, 101st overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft, Boll spent the past two seasons with Lincoln of the USHL, where he registered 29-32-61 and 470 PIM in 116 games.
Trevor Hendrikx (Peterborough) - Hendrikx has scored 3-17-20 with two power-play goals, and a +10 plus-minus rating in 22 contests. He ranks T-20th in the OHL in points by a defenseman. Peterborough is 21-5-1-0 on the season, first in the OHL and ranked No. 4 in the CHL's Top-10. Hendrikx entered the season with 25-68-93 in 232 career OHL games, coming off of a career-year with 15-33-48 in 68 games during the '04-05 campaign.
Dan LaCosta (Barrie) - LaCosta stopped 25 of 27 saves in a 5-2 Team OHL win over Team Russia in Game 3 of the Canada/Russia Challenge. During the regular season he has posted a 15-6-1-2 record with a 2.39 goals against average, .923 save percentage, and three shutouts. LaCosta ranks first in the OHL in goals against average, save percentage, and shutouts, and T-3rd in wins. Barrie is second in the OHL's Eastern Conference (41 points) and ranked No. 10 in the CHL's Top 10. A third round selection by the Blue Jackets in the 2004 Entry Draft, LaCosta was 25-11-4 with a 2.86 GAA and .902 SV%, and one shutout, ranking tied for second in the OHL in wins.
Adam McQuaid (Sudbury) - McQuaid has scored 2-4-6 in 28 games this season. Columbus' second round selection, 55th overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft, he entered the season with 6-22-28 and 123 PIM in 113 career OHL games.
Kyle Wharton (Sault Ste. Marie) - Wharton recorded 1-3-4 in three games last week to improve his season totals to 6-14-20 in 30 OHL games. He ranks T-20th in the OHL in points by a defenseman and has already set a career-high for goals in a season, besting the five he netted last year. Wharton also dished out 0-1-1 in two games for Team OHL in the Canada/Russia Challenge, including an assist on the game-winning goal. Columbus' second round pick, 59th overall, in the 2004 Entry Draft, Wharton has recorded 12-39-51 with 109 PIM in 139 career OHL games.
Philippe Dupuis (Moncton) - After scoring 22 points in 11 games during the month of November, Dupuis opened December with 1-3-4 in three games last week. In 22 games this season he has registered 9-30-30 with a +11 plus/minus rating, ranking T-12th in the QMJHL in assists. Moncton's 22-9-0-1 record ranks No. 9 in the CHL's Top-10. Dupuis ranked among the QMJHL scoring leaders last year with 34-50-84 in 62 games for Rouyn-Noranda. He was traded from Rouyn-Noranda to Moncton during the offseason.
Adam Pineault (Moncton) - Pineault also recorded 1-3-4 in three games last week to improve his season totals to 9-11-20 in just 17 games this season after rebounding from an early season injury. At 22-9-0-1, Moncton ranks No. 9 in the CHL's Top-10. A second round pick by the Blue Jackets in the 2004 Entry Draft, he ranked among the QMJHL rookie leaders in most major statistical categories last season with 26-20-46 and +12 rating in 61 games. He missed two weeks during the 2003-04 season while playing with Team USA at World Junior Championships and is a candidate to skate for Team USA at this years World Juniors.
Petr Pohl (Acadie-Bathurst) - Pohl has opened the season with 15-33-48, +8 plus-minus rating, six power-play goals, and three game-winning scores in 33 games. He ranks T-5th in the league in assists and T-12th in points. Acadie-Bathurst is 22-8-2-2 (48 points), good for second place in the QMJHL and the No. 2 ranking in the CHL's Top-10. A 2004 Entry Draft selection by the Blue Jackets, Pohl entered the year with 50-59-109 in 132 career QMJHL games.
Justin Vienneau (Shawinigan) - Vienneau has posted 1-8-9 in 30 games this season, just three assist shy of his career high set last year. He ranks 15th in the QMJHL with 89 penalty minutes. A 2004 Entry Draft selection by the Blue Jackets, he entered the season with 4-18-22 and 275 PIM in 113 career QMJHL games.
Derek Reinhart (Regina) - Reinhart has opened the season with 0-1-1 and a +3 plus-minus rating in 18 games. The defenseman was Columbus' sixth pick, 177th overall, in this summer's Entry Draft. He entered the year with 3-11-14 and 312 PIM in 123 career WHL games.
Kris Russell (Medicine Hat) - Russell scored two goals in three games last week to push his WHL totals to 8-16-24 in 28 games. Named Team Captain for Medicine Hat this season, he's tied for the league lead in goals by a defenseman and ranks 5th in points by a defenseman. Russell also scored the game's opening goal in a 3-1 Game 6 win for Team WHL in CHL's Canada/Russia Challenge. Medicine Hat is 20-6-0-6 for 46 points, tied for first place in the WHL's Eastern Conference and ranked No. 7 in the CHL's Top-10. Russell was Columbus' third pick, 67th overall, in this summer's Entry Draft. He ranked among the league's top scoring defensemen last season with 26-35-61 in 72 games, the most goals scored by a defenseman in any of the three Canadian Junior leagues.
