Q&A with the CBJ: Duvie Westcott
(CBJ.com) – Q: What is it about hockey that you love the most?
(Duvie) – A: It’s just kind of the idea of going to battle with the guys in the dressing room. There’s nothing better than the feeling of winning a really close game, having the fans cheering for you and then coming into the dressing room and looking around at everybody…there’s kind of a high from the win.
(CBJ.com) – Q: What are your personal and team goals for the season?
(Duvie) – A: Our goals are to be prepared for every individual game and take every game one at a time. Personally, I don’t really have any goals–just to play well and see the team have success.
(CBJ.com) – Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your family and growing up in Winnipeg?
(Duvie) – A: I grew up in a middle-class or working-class family. My mom was a high school math teacher, my dad was a real estate agent and I have one sister. It was a blast growing up in Winnipeg.
(CBJ.com) – Q: Who were some of your heroes growing up?
(Duvie) – A: Dale Hawerchuk…and I really admired Phil Housley when he came to Winnipeg. Those two guys were pretty cool to watch for the Jets. Obviously, my mom and my dad were my heroes growing up, too.
(CBJ.com) – Q: What’s been the highlight of your hockey career so far?
(Duvie) – A: I’d say playing that first NHL game. I didn’t really expect to get called up. Playing that first NHL game against Calgary (in 2002) was pretty crazy. I don’t even remember much about it. I was up for maybe a week that first time, and people asked me that summer ‘How was it?’ Well, it was unbelievable. I was just like a flash. I was so nervous.
(CBJ.com) – Q: What’s your favorite food?
(Duvie) – A: That’d be a nice steak…a nice sirloin with a side of Alaskan king crablegs.
(CBJ.com) – Q: What kind of music gets you pumped up?
(Duvie) – A: Anything that’s upbeat. I don’t really listen to any music other than what they have in the weight room, but I’d say Audioslave is probably my favorite.
(CBJ.com) – Q: If you weren’t playing pro hockey, what would you be doing right now?
(Duvie) – A: (Laughing) I don’t know. I might be working at the box factory at home back in Winnipeg.
(CBJ.com) – Q: Who’s your funniest teammate. Jason Chimera seems to be the popular answer, but I’ve heard that ‘Bubba’ Eriksson might be challenging that?
(Duvie) – A: (Laughing hard) Anders? Anders isn’t that funny! I’d say ‘Chimmer’ and ‘Veebs’ (David Vyborny). Veebs is pretty funny.
(CBJ.com) – Q: Describe “Duvie Westcott” in one word.
(Duvie) – A: Simple.
