Five Blue Jackets at World Championships

The International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in Moscow, Russia began over the weekend and the Columbus Blue Jackets are represented by five players - Rick Nash and Jason Chimera playing for Team Canada, David Vyborny and Rostislav Klesla for Team Czech and Fredrik Norrena for Team Finland.

The first day of the tournament, goaltender Fredrik Norrena stopped 25 shots on goal en route to a 5-0 shutout victory over Team Ukraine. David Vyborny netted a goal in the first period of an 8-2 win over the Team Belarus.

On Saturday, Jason Chimera had two assists versus Team Germany in a 3-2 Team Canada win. Chimera helped set up the game-wininng goal by Jamal Mayers in the third period, after assisting on a Mayers goal in the first as well.

One day later, Vyborny had two assists in a 6-1 victory over Team Austria. He had one assist in the first period and another in the third.

Monday, Nash and Chimera scored back-to-back goals to pace Team Canada to 2-0 lead. After Team Norway tied it, Team Canada scored twice more to capture the 4-2 win. Nash's goal came on the power play, while Chimera's was even strength.

On Tuesday, Vyborny was back at it again, this time registering an assist in a 4-3 Team Czech win over Team USA. Norrena was back in net, after resting in the second game of the preliminary round for Team Finland, and suffered a tough 5-4 loss to Team Russia. He made 29 saves in 60 minutes of work.

Wednesday, Team Canada was victorious 5-4 over Team Slovakia after Rick Nash deflected in a power-play goal at the 9:02 mark of the third period in the final game of the preliminary round for both teams. Nash had an assist in the first period and another in the second. The goal capped a three point effort and gave him four points for the tournament. Jason Chimera also had an assist in the game, on a second period Jamal Mayers goal to give Team Canada a 2-1 lead.

Team's begam qualifying round play Thursday and both David Vyborny and Rostislav Klelsa played for Team Czech. However, Team Germany defeated the Blue Jackets and their countrymen 2-0. Team Finland was also in action, but Fredrik Norrena was not as he backed up Kari Lehtonen in a 2-0 victory over Team Switzerland. Norrena has alternated with Lehtonen through the first four games.

Team Canada defeated Team Belarus 6-3 on Friday in the qualifying round with lots of help from Chimera and Nash. In the second period, Nash had two assists on the first two goals of the game for Team Canada. Chimera would add an assist later in a four goal second frame.

Team Finland and Fredrik Norrena were victorious on Saturday, as the Blue Jackets goaltender stopped all 13 Team Italy shots to record his second shutout of the tournament. Team Czech did not get the same result against Team Slovakia. Defenseman Rostislav Klesla tallied a goal in the third period, however it was not enough in a 3-2 loss for Team Czech.

All three teams with Blue Jackets players on them were in action on Sunday, with Team Canada facing Team Czech. David Vyborny had the best individual game of the four Columbus players with two assists, one in each of the first two periods. However, it was Team Canada that came away with the win, 4-3. Rick Nash was a +2 and Jason Chimera was a +1, and they combined for five shots on goal. Klesla had one shot on goal for Team Czech. Team Finland were 1-0 losers to Team Sweden and Fredrik Norrena did not play.

Monday, Team Canada defeated Team USA in the final game of the qualifying round by a count of 6-3. Rick Nash had one assist on a Mathew Lombardi goal in the first period and was a +3 plus/minus. Jason Chimera did not record a point in the game.

On Wednesday, Team Czech suffered a 4-0 defeat to Team Russia in a Final Round game. David Vyborny and Rostislav Klesla had three shots on goal each.

On Thursday, Team Canada beat Team Switzerland 5-1 and both Blue Jackets tallied a point. Nash scored his third goal of the tournament in the second period en route to a +2 plus/minus performance. Chimera assisted on a Jamal Mayers goal, also in the second period. Team Finland was victorious over Team USA in a shootout, 5-4, however Columbus goalie Fredrik Norrena did not play.

Team Canada defeated Team Sweden 4-1 in the Semi-Finals on Saturday, while Team Finland got past Team Russia, 2-1. While Fredrik Norrena did not play, Rick Nash played and scored a goal for Canada in the second period of their three goal victory. Jason Chimera also played but did not register a point.

In the Finals on Saturday, Nash scored twice as Team Canada took home the gold, scoring a 4-2 win over Team Finland. For his efforts throughout the tournament, Nash was named Most Valuable Player. He scored the first and final goal of the game in the championship game.
