CBJ Prospect Playoff Report V

The hockey regular season has come to an end and the playoffs have begun for a number of Columbus Blue Jackets junior prospects. Medicine Hat players Derek Dorsett and Kris Russell played in the Western Hockey League Final versus the Vancouver Giants, while Playmouth's Jared Boll and Tom Sestito faced the Sudbury Wolves in the Ontario League Finals.

*Derek Dorsett

Western Hockey League Playoffs

Dorsett was named WHL Player of the Week for the week of April 23-29th. Derek earned player of the week honors by scoring goals in three straight games to help lead the Tigers defeat the Calgary Hitmen and advance to the Western Hockey League Championship. For his efforts in the series, Derek was also named the MNP Most Valuable Player for recognition of his play during the MNP Eastern Conference Finals.

Derek, a 20-year-old from Kindersley, SK, has recorded points (6G, 6A) in eight straight games, while overall posting eight goals and 14 points in 11 playoff games.

Western Hockey League Playoffs

Russell has four assists in five games for the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Eastern Conference Finals of the WHL playoffs versus Calgary, including two in the series clinching win. Russell has totaled 4-12-16 in 16 games. The Tigers defeated the Hitman in the best of seven series, 4-1. They advanced to play the Vancouver Giants in the WHL Finals, beginning this Friday. The schedule is listed below:

  • Tues., May 8 at Vancouver - 7 p.m.
  • Wed., May 9 at Vancouver - 7 p.m.

  • *Sun., May 13 at Medicine Hat - 6 p.m.
  • *Mon., May 14 at Medicine Hat - 7 p.m.

*Tom Sestito

Ontario Hockey League Playoffs

Sestito helped the Whalers to a 4-1 series win over London with 3-2-5 in the five game set. Sestito was named the No. 2 star of game two, when he had two goals and one assist. For the playoffs, Sestito has 10-4-14 in 14 games and is a +7 for the playoffs.

Ontario Hockey League Playoffs

Boll had two goals in four games in the Conference Finals with Plymouth. Boll's goals came in game one and in a 5-2 in game two of the series. He now has 3-2-5 and is a +5 in 14 playoff games. The schedule for the OHL Finals between Sudbury and Plymouth is as follows:

  • Sat., May 6 at Plymouth - 3 p.m.
  • Tues., May 8 at Sudbury - 7:30 p.m.
  • Wed., May 9 at Sudbury - 7:30 p.m.

  • *Mon., May 15 at Plymouth - 7:05 p.m.

Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Playoffs

Brassard had four goals and seven assists in the second round of the QMJHL playoffs for No. 4 seed Drummondville. However, his efforts weren't enough, as his team was defeated by No. 6 seed Rouyn-Noranda 4-3 in game seven of a second round series. For the entire playoffs he had nine goals and 15 assists in 12 games - 2.00 points per game average.

Ontario Hockey League Playoffs

Mason advanced to the OHL Conference Finals versus Plymouth, where his team suffered a 4-1 series loss. In game one he made 48 saves in a 5-1 loss, but was named No. 3 star. A 50 save effort was needed for his team to win game four 5-2 and Mason was named the No. 1 star for that game. However, the Knights fell short in game five of their series with Plymouth. For the playoffs, he played in 15 games with an 8-6-0 record, a 3.50 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.
