This Week in Blue Jackets History: Mar. 16-22

Every Wednesday, BlueJackets.com will highlight the best games and most memorable moments from the history of the Columbus Blue Jackets. This week we look back at the best from March 16-22.

March 16, 2001 – On the heels of a perfect performance in a 3-0 win over Calgary two nights earlier, Ron Tugnutt turns away all 34 shots he faces in a 3-0 Columbus win over the Atlanta Thrashers. The back-to-back shutouts (64 total shots faced), a first in the Jackets' brief history, help Tugnutt earn NHL Player of the Week honors.

March 19, 2001 – David Vyborny establishes a unique record for NHL freshmen. The Jackets' forward beats Nashville Predators goaltender Tomas Vokoun with a penalty shot, becoming the first rookie in league history to score twice in a season in that situation. Vyborny also converted a penalty shot against Chicago's Robbie Tallas on October 15, 2000. The goal on Vokoun also marked the first ever penalty shot awarded to the Jackets on home ice, while the penalty shot in Chicago was the first ever for the expansion franchise.

March 21, 2004 – Nikolai Zherdev showcases some of the skill and potential that made him the fourth overall pick of the 2003 Entry Draft. Zherdev scores twice (including the game-winner) and sets up two more goals as the Jackets skate to a big 5-4 road victory over the Vancouver Canucks. The four points establishes a new franchise record for most points in a game by a Columbus rookie.

March 20, 2007 – Bruising defenseman Ole-Kristian Tollefsen gets into the action in the offensive end of the rink, scoring the first goal of his NHL career – on the power play – in a 5-2 win over Chicago. While the big Oslo, Norway native had to wait almost an entire season to get his name on the scoresheet, he wastes little time in adding to his goal tally. Tollefsen's second ever marker comes two nights later against Chris Osgood in Detroit. And it's a big one. The D-man ties the game at 1-1 before former Red Wing Sergei Fedorov finishes off his old club with a shootout winner.
