Prospects Report: December 13

Matt Greer, LW

22 years old, 6-2, 190 pounds (St. Paul, Minnesota)

Columbus's 8th pick, 233rd overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft

Greer, a physical player who has no problems getting involved in the tough areas on the ice, has two goals and two assists in 16 games for the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. A junior at the university, Greer picked up three of those points (1-2-3) in a 4-2 win over St. Cloud State back in October. He had a +2 rating 16 games into the season.

Nick Sucharski, LW

20 years old, 6-2, 185 pounds (Oakville, Ontario)

Columbus's 6th pick, 136th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft

A talented playmaker who's known as an intelligent player, Sucharski is also beginning to fill out his frame as a junior at Michigan State University. The forward has three goals and 10 helpers through 17 games for the powerhouse Spartans (12-3-2 overall). Sucharski had an impressive night in a recent 3-2 win over Lake Superior State, which helped snap a four-game winless drought for MSU. He set up one goal and then buried the winner with a high shot for his lone game-winning goal of the season. Sucharski had nine goals and 15 assists in 41 games during his sophomore campaign at MSU.

Matt Marquardt, LW

20 years old, 6-3, 229 pounds (North Bay, Ontario)

Columbus's 10th pick, 194th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft

The towering winger, who sports the same jersey number as Jackets' star Rick Nash, has showcased a similar blend of physical dominance and touch around the net in his third season with the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Marquardt leads the Wildcats with 19 goals and is tied alongside teammates for Phil Mangan and Matt Eagles for the overall scoring lead with 31 points through 33 outings. He actually wasn't selected when eligible for his Ontario Hockey League draft year but former Moncton coach and current New York Islanders head coach Ted Nolan convinced him to come to the Q, where he played in a Memorial Cup final. Marquardt scored 41 times and finished with 70 points in 67 games last year with the Wildcats.

Robert Nyholm, RW

19 years old, 6-1, 200 pounds (Pietarsaari, Finland)

Columbus's 10th pick, 194th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft

Nyholm possesses numerous attributes that coaches crave like strength on his skates and the ability to hit with power. Through 25 games with the Kingston Frontenacs, he has a single goal and four assists. Nyholm, a rare underager for Finland at the 2005 U18 World Championships, finished with 13 goals and 21 assists in 66 games with Kingston in 2006-07.

Will Weber D

19 years old, 6-4, 205 pounds (Traverse City, Michigan)

Columbus's 3rd pick, 53rd overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft

Weber, the first overall selection in the United States Hockey League draft, has been mired in a bit of an offensive slump in recent weeks but the imposing blueliner has been getting opportunities. He leads all Chicago Steel defensemen in shots on goal with 46 and ranks third on the team overall in that category. Weber has three goals and six assists on the season, while leading the team with 91 penalty minutes, 34 of which have come in his last three games.

Jake Hansen RW

18 years old, 6-1, 182 pounds (St. Paul, Minnesota)

Columbus's 4th pick, 68th overall in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft

Hansen continues to progress in his first full season with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL. The St. Paul, Minnesota native ranks fourth in team scoring with 10 goals and eight assists in 21 games so far this season. Hansen has been particularly adept at setting up goals on the power play as five of his eight helpers have come with the Stampede on the man advantage. The 10 goals also tie him for second on the team in that department.
