Columbus Blue Jackets Acquire Defenseman Milan Jurcina, Forward Chris Clark from Washington in Exchange for Forward Jason Chimera

COLUMBUS, OHIO –COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Milan Jurcina and forward Chris Clark from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Jason Chimera, club General Manager Scott Howson announced December 28. The transaction is pending the completion of player physicals.

"We are pleased to add Chris Clark and Milan Jurcina to our hockey club. Both are veteran players who we believe will contribute significantly to our team," said Howson. "We'd also like to thank Jason Chimera for his contributions to the Blue Jackets organization both on and off the ice over the past four-plus seasons."

Jurcina, 26, is a 6-foot-4, 240-pound native of Liptovsky Mikulas, Slovakia. He has registered 14 goals and 36 assists for 50 points and 210 penalty minutes in 302 career NHL games with the Capitals and Boston Bruins. He has tallied 0-4-4 and 14 penalty minutes in 27 games this season.

Boston's seventh pick, 241st overall, in the 2001 Entry Draft, Jurcina (pronounced YEWR-chee-nah) played three seasons of major junior hockey with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League before spending two seasons with the American Hockey League’s Providence Bruins from 2003-05. In 2005-06, he tallied 6-5-11 and 54 penalty minutes in 51 games as a rookie with Boston and appeared in six games with Slovakia at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turin, Italy. He joined the Capitals midway through the 2006-07 season and helped the club capture Southeast Division titles in 2007-08 and 2008-09. He tallied a career-high 3-11-14 and 68 penalty minutes in 79 games in 2008-09 and added two goals and 12 penalty minutes in 14 Stanley Cup Playoffs games.

Clark, 33, has registered 95-99-194 and 641 penalty minutes in 518 career NHL games with Washington and the Calgary Flames. The 6-foot-1, 196-pound native of South Windsor, Connecticut has appeared in 38 games this season, collecting 4-11-15 and 27 penalty minutes. Prior to missing most of the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons due to injury, he posted 20-19-39 and 110 penalty minutes in 78 games in 2005-06 and a career-high 30-24-54 and 66 penalty minutes in 74 games in 2006-07 with the Capitals.

Calgary’s third pick, 77th overall, in the 1994 Entry Draft, Clark earned All-ECAC honors during four seasons at Clarkson University from 1994-98. He spent six seasons in the Flames organization from 1998-04, including 2003-04 when he collected 10-15-25 and 106 penalty minutes in 82 games and added 3-3-6 and 30 penalty minutes in 26 playoff games to help the Flames reach the Stanley Cup Final.

Chimera, 30, has registered 81-91-172 and 465 penalty minutes in 461 career NHL games with the Blue Jackets and Edmonton Oilers, including 62-74-136 and 372 penalty minutes in 331 games since joining Columbus in 2005-06. He has tallied 8-9-17 and 47 penalty minutes in 39 games this season.

The Blue Jackets return to action tonight when they host the Detroit Red Wings. Game time from Nationwide Arena is 7 p.m. ET with the game being televised live nationally on VERSUS. The game will also be broadcast live on the Wheeling Island Hotel Casino Blue Jackets Radio Network and flagship stations WBNS-AM, Sports Radio 1460 The Fan and WWCD-FM, CD101, and online at BlueJackets.com.
