Looking into the Future…

With only a few games left in the season, it can be difficult to get up for a game. There's no post-season berth waiting in the wings and the reality of that is depressing. That being said, you want to finish the season strong and carry any momentum you can into next year.

For a select group of Blue Jackets, there's no problem getting up for these games because it's an audition for future playing time. Over the past two weeks the Jackets have put Trevor Frischmon, Greg Moore, Tomas Kana, Grant Clitsome and Chad Kolarik in the line-up. Some of this has been done because of injuries and some to see what the future may hold for these players.

Grant Clitsome has settled in nicely, on defense. His decision making improves from game to game and he's showing he can help this team. Greg Moore was acquired in a trade a few weeks ago, for defenseman Dylan Reese, and is getting a look to see if the organization would like to keep him as a depth player. Frischmon, Kolarik and Kana made their NHL debuts, which is the realization of a dream for any player. Frischmon has toiled for the past four years in Syracuse, doing everything asked of him and he deserved to get the opportunity. Kolarik has also played well in the minors, and after being traded by Phoenix for Alexandre Picard, gets a chance to perform in the show. Kana was almost a throw in when the Jackets made a minor league trade with St. Louis, but the former second round pick is looking for new life here.

Watching the energy these players brings has been fun for me. Of course, I was around a couple of them over the past few years and know how hard they've worked for this chance. When you have players like these in your line-up, you can be sure the work ethic will be there night in and night out - they have no choice. What they do now determines what they get to do in the future.
