The Offseason Plan for the Players!!
"The Quality of a person's life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor." -Vince Lombardi
It has been a difficult year for everybody, especially for the players that had to live with the game by game competition. More failure was present than success this year. A playoff berth a year ago allowed the hype and expectations to run wild. The detractors were loud and prevalent, but the majority of fans still feel a sense of hope is within reach in the very near future. So what do the players do now?
It is an off season to take care of the body and build an appreciation of it. Remember that you are an NHL athlete. It will be a mixture of time off and then the commitment to maintain and build a body on inner and outer strength.
It was a long year, an Olympic year that squished a schedule to 16-17 games per month. But with the season in the rear view mirror, it is the time to reflect and analyze the past 8+ months. It is time to choose a positive attitude and share that thought with friends and family. Surround yourself with those people that have that same attitude. Choose to be great, not good. Choose to dedicate one’s self to a quality of passion and enthusiasm in the everyday workings of the body and the mind.
Set some summer parameters on what needs to be done to be great. Do this with people that can help. Will it be with a strength coach? A sport psychologist? Or a combination of both? Sacrifice remains on the horizon for each and every one of these players.
Somerset Maugham once said "it is a funny thing about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best from yourself, you very often get it!"
It remains in the hands of the players that have the task of playing the game!! Reflect... Remember... Respond.
