Coach or Players? It is a Little of Both

June 1

The score was a 6-5 final with the Chicago Blackhawks taking a 1-0 lead in the SCF. Was the result indicative of poor coaching on the defensive side of the game or was it the players naturally suffering from game 1 nerves and jitters? The result was turnovers that made the goaltending look below average.

The second game of the series ended with a 2-1 score. The 'Hawks again walked away with the victory. Was this a superbly tactical game where the coaches played chess in line matches and player personnel? Was it fantastic goaltending that was simply amazing? Again, you answer the questions.

What is my point? The CBJ are in search of the PERFECT coach to proclaim as the "ONE" to get them back on track for a run at Lord Stanley's Cup. Is that the magic ingredient? Will that be the difference in taking the next step for this organization? Please look at what is happening in the finals of the Cup run this year and analyze the process it takes to make this coveted run to the Final. Both teams ran the gamut on both ends of the spectrum over the past few years. Their respective success was a combination of coaching, talent, depth and a lot of losing (resulting in high draft picks).

The constant for both teams lay in the fact that they struggled over the past few years. The 'Hawks, with their struggles enabled them to gather a pair of players in Toews and Kane through the draft, as third and first choices overall in their respective drafts. Free agents Marion Hossa and John Madden bring their own skill set to a team in need of players that have proven themselves as winners. Veteran coach Joel Quenneville is only a year and half into his tenure with Chicago.

The Flyers were able to land some key ingredients through the trade route and free agency. Pronger, Briere, Hartnell and Timmonen have fit into the team concept. Richards, Carter and Giroux as homegrown talent have added some of the needed skill. Their coach is less than a season in experience in the Flyers organization, but does bring a plethora of winning to the forefront.

How far away are the CBJ? When one looks at the recent past, do not count out what is going on in Columbus. The future is now!

Stay tuned... there will be a lot going in the month of June that will have a profound affect on the future of the CBJ.
