A Look Back at the Draft: 2005

2005 Entry Draft

The Blue Jackets sixth Entry Draft took place in Ottawa, Ontario at the Westin Hotel on July 30, 2005. Due to the lockout the previous season, the draft order was selected by a structured lottery. The Pittsburgh Penguins won what was called the "Sidney Crosby Sweepstakes" and selected Sidney Crosby with the first overall selection in the draft. The second pick was held by the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks selected Owen Sound Attack right winger Bobby Ryan. Carolina took American defenseman Jack Johnson with the third overall pick. The Blue Jackets held the sixth overall pick and tabbed center Gilbert Brule of the Vancouver Giants.

PLAYER SPOTLIGHT – KRIS RUSSELL, DEFENSEMAN (3rd round, 67th overall pick)

Kris Russell

Kris Russell has quickly established himself as part of the next wave of defensemen in the Blue Jackets system. The third round pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft of the Blue Jackets has provided a spark offensively from the backend. Russell spent two years playing for the Medicine Hat Tigers and collected numerous WHL player awards including back-to-back Defenseman of the Year honors. Along with those awards, he led Team Canada to two World Junior Ice Hockey gold medals in 2006 and 2007.

After recording 32-37-69 and 56 penalty minutes, all career highs, during the 2006-07 year, Russell made his NHL debut with Columbus during the 2007-08 NHL Season. He appeared in 67 games that season and the Jackets were 6-1-1 when Russell recorded a point. He appeared in 66 games the following season and also appeared in all four games of Columbus' first ever playoff series against the Detroit Red Wings. Russell scored his first playoff goal during Game 4 of that series.

Russell became a force during the second half of the 2009-10 season where he notched 7-15-22, 32 penalty minutes and a +3 in 70 games with Columbus. He ranked tied for second on the club in plus/minus rating and led all club defensemen in goals, while ranking third in points. He also set career highs this past year in goals, points, penalty minutes, plus/minus rating, and games played.

BOYD ON RUSSELL

"We felt Kris was going to be one of the new era defensemen in the National Hockey League. He is starting to show now what he was able to show in Junior hockey. He's a winner, he took his team to the Memorial Cup, he played in the World Juniors and won World Junior Championships twice and he played on the World stage this summer, for Team Canada at the World Championships."

Blue Jackets Director of Hockey Operations and Player Personnel Don Boyd joined the organization in 1999 as director of amateur scouting. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, he has spent the past 30 years as a general manager, coach and scout in the NHL, NCAA and Canadian Hockey League.
