PLAYER SPOTLIGHT – STEVE MASON, GOALTENDER (3rd round, 69th overall pick)

Steve Mason

Steve Mason quickly established himself as one of the top young goalies in National Hockey League. The third round pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft of had Calder Trophy winning first season in Ohio's capital city, after spending parts of three seasons in the Ontario Hockey League (with London and Kitchener).

Mason made his NHL debut November 5, 2008 against Edmonton, won that game and never looked back. He appeared in 61 games that season and the Jackets were 33-20-7 when Mason was between the pipes. He led the NHL with 10 shutouts, had a 2.29 goals against average and a .919 save percentage. He also helped lead Columbus to its first ever playoff appearance, against the Detroit Red Wings.

Mason followed up with a 20-26-9 season in year two this past season, including five more shutouts, a .901 save percentage and 3.06 goals against average. At just 22 years old, the Oakville, Ontario-native has a bright future in the NHL and with the club.

BOYD ON MASON

"Steve Mason has all the new era goaltending ingrediants that you look for as a scout - size, quickness, can fight through and see around traffic and handles the puck very well. He reads the game very well. We felt like Steve could be a mainstay in the organization and the NHL and he is certainly on his way to proving that to be the case. He proved himself in his rookie year by fighting through some illness (mono) to capture the Calder Trophy."

Blue Jackets Director of Hockey Operations and Player Personnel Don Boyd joined the organization in 1999 as director of amateur scouting. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, he has spent the past 30 years as a general manager, coach and scout in the NHL, NCAA and Canadian Hockey League.
