PLAYER SPOTLIGHT – JOHN MOORE, DEFENSEMAN (1st round, 21st overall pick)

John Moore

Selected in the 1st round, 21st overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, John Moore is a polished defenseman with offensive upside. He is a team player with a solid work ethic, who’s willing to sacrifice himself for the betterment of the team. He is part of the foundation for the young Jackets' prospects of the future.

Moore began his climb to the NHL in 2007-08 with the Chicago Steel, where in 56 games he recorded 4-11-15 with a plus/minus rating of 4. He also contributed two assists in seven playoff games at defense. In 2008-09, Moore saw his numbers greatly improve. He recorded 14-25-39 in 57 games played. He led all Steel defensemen in goals, assists, and total points. For all of his hard work, he was awarded the USHL Defenseman of the Year.

After getting drafted by the Blue Jackets, Moore headed to the OHL Kitchener Rangers. In his rookie season with the Rangers, he recorded 10-37-47, 53 penalty minutes in 61 games. He led all Ranger defensemen in assists and total points. In the playoffs, he recorded 4-12-16 in 20 games, which was 4th most in total points among all OHL defensemen.

BOYD ON MOORE

"John is very committed and competitive young man. He is a player that takes his career very seriously, and his drive is going to show up in the fall and hopefully force us to make some hard decisions. He had a very strong campaign in his first year in the Ontario Hockey League last year with Kitchener."

Blue Jackets Director of Hockey Operations and Player Personnel Don Boyd joined the organization in 1999 as director of amateur scouting. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, he has spent the past 30 years as a general manager, coach and scout in the NHL, NCAA and Canadian Hockey League.
