COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets General Manager Scott Howson announced August 3 that Rob Riley has been named head coach of the Springfield Falcons, Columbus' American Hockey League affiliate.

"We are very pleased that Rob has accepted the position of head coach with our AHL affiliate, the Springfield Falcons," Howson said. "He has a tremendous amount of experience coaching young players, and he is familiar with all of our prospects due to his scouting position in our organization."

Riley, 55, spent the past four years as a regional scout for the Blue Jackets and was responsible for scouting preparatory school, junior and collegiate hockey in the northeast United States. Prior to joining the Blue Jackets, he spent 18 seasons as head coach of Army, where he compiled a 257-288-33 record (.473 win percentage) in 578 career games from 1986-2004. He served as an assistant coach at Army in 1985-86 to his father, Jack, and the two are the all-time winningest father-son combination in college hockey history with 848 victories between them.

The West Point, New York native played four seasons at Boston College from 1974-78 and captained the 1977-78 team to an ECAC title and berth in the national championship game. Riley began his coaching career at his alma mater, serving as an assistant coach and head junior varsity coach from 1978-80. He then spent three seasons at St. Lawrence University as an assistant coach from 1980-83.

Riley's first head coaching position came in 1983-84 at Babson College. That season, he led the club to a 27-5-1 record and became the youngest coach to lead a team to the NCAA Division III National Championship. In 1984-85, he led the Beavers to a 22-9 record and was named the American Hockey Coaches Association College Division Coach of the Year. He has also represented his country on two occasions, serving as an assistant coach for the United States teams that participated in the World University Games in 1989 and 1991.

Riley was born January 15, 1955. He and his wife, Debbie, are the parents of son, Brett (19), and daughter, Sarah (22).

The Blue Jackets are commemorating their 10th NHL season in 2010-11. Season tickets as well as six-, 10- and 20-game packages are on sale now.
