Rimer's Game Day Ramblings - Jan. 15
Remember back earlier in the season when the Blue Jackets were rolling and were the talk of the NHL?
The Jackets were in California on their three game West Coast trip. Head Coach Scott Arniel said to the players, somewhat matter-of-factly, "let's be greedy" and go out and win all three games. And they did!
Well, after winning last night's game against the Red Wings in a shootout 3-2, that message needs to be sent out again tonight.
A weekend sweep with a victory over the Wings here in the Motor City would do wonders for this young and inconsistent group. The Jackets played very well last night and are aware of the effort needed to win these games on a consistent basis. If they want to be a playoff team and that is what they say, the club needs to string several wins together. Even coach Arniel is looking for the team to go on a bit of a run right now, suggesting in his post game news conference last night, "the enjoyment of the win over Detroit lasts for 15 minutes. I'd really be impressed if we get four points out of these games."
The Wings already without the likes of Pavel Datsyuk, Dan Clearly, Mike Modano, Brad Stuart and Chris Osgood last night, lost two more valuable players. Goaltender Jimmy Howard left with a knee bruise in the first period while Tomas Holmstrom broke his hand late in the game and is gone for from four to six weeks. Feel no mercy for the Wings, now is the time to jump on the Central Division leaders.
Steve Mason solid in his return to the nets last night will again start against the Wings with Joey MacDonald, who game on for Howard at the 12:43 mark of the first period and stopped all 21 shots he faced in regulation and overtime, will again man the cage for Detroit.
Game time from Joe Louis Arena is 7 p.m. and yes tonight's tilt is in HD on FOX Sports Ohio.
