Rimer's Game Day Ramblings - Feb. 4
Moore will not play, Mason in net for Blue Jackets
The Blue Jackets start the weekend eight points out of the final two playoff spots and need to sweep their two starts, tonight here in Detroit and tomorrow night back at Nationwide against the Oilers.
Although the Jackets have dropped their last two starts they have won their last two ROAD games and for the most part they have played well against their Central Division rival Red Wings.
Coach Scott Arniel was upbeat this morning as he talked about tonight's game and the importance of it. In looking back to Tuesday's 7-4 loss to Chicago he said, "We squandered the game away by making one more mistake than them" in the sloppily played game.
The Blue Jackets No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft John Moore, who joined the team here in Detroit last night, will not make his NHL Debut against the Red Wings. Depending on what happens tonight, I would think there is a good chance the smooth skating defenseman will play tomorrow night against the Oilers at Nationwide. Moore took part in this morning's game day skate and the coaching staff worked extensively with the 20-year old defenseman after the other players left the ice.
Coach Arniel made it very clear, when Moore does play he will see considerable ice time.
As for the Red Wings they have been winning close games of late, but have struggled defensively giving up four or more goals in six of their last 10 games. Coach Mike Babcock is far from pleased with the Wings defensive game and says "you can't be successful playing the way we have (played)." Despite that fact they are still finding a way to win.
Goaltending match up tonight will see Jimmy Howard going for the Wings, while Steve Mason returns to the Blue Jackets net after being pulled following the second period Tuesday night against the Blackhawks.
It's a 7:30 p.m. start on FOX Sports Ohio.
