Columbus Blue Jackets Claim Defenseman Craig Rivet Off Waivers from the Buffalo Sabres

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have claimed defenseman Craig Rivet off waivers from the Buffalo Sabres, Blue Jackets Executive Vice President and General Manager Scott Howson announced February. Rivet is expected to join the club in time for Sunday's game at Nashville.

Rivet (pronounced rih-VAY) has registered 49 goals and 187 assists for 236 points with 1,148 penalty minutes in 909 career games with the Montreal Canadiens, San Jose Sharks and Sabres. He has also tallied 4-19-23 and 69 penalty minutes in 69 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, averaging 22:35 time on ice in those contests. He has spent the past three seasons in Buffalo, serving as the club’s captain. He has collected 4-38-42 and 237 penalty minutes in 165 games as a Sabre, including 1-2-3 and 12 penalty minutes in 23 games this season

"Craig Rivet brings steady play, experience and leadership to our team, which will be very important as we head down the stretch this season," said Howson. "We think he will be a good addition to our group and are happy to have him as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets."

The North Bay, Ontario native was Montreal's fourth pick, 68th overall, in the 1992 Entry Draft. He was a member of the Canadiens organization from 1994-2007 and enjoyed his best season with the club in 2005-06 when he tallied 7-27-34 and 109 penalty minutes in 82 games. He joined the San Jose Sharks during the 2006-07 campaign and the following year registered a career-high 5-30-35 and 104 penalty minutes in 74 games with the club.

Prior to embarking on his professional career, Rivet played three seasons with Kingston of the Ontario Hockey League from 1991-94. He collected 36-128-164 and 314 penalty minutes in 191 career OHL games.
