Post Game Quotes and Numbers - Mar. 17

Numbers

23:46 –The total time on ice tonight for Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash, one of the most involved players in the game. He led all forwards in TOI and registered a game-high six shots on goal to go with a game-high four hits. Though he hasn’t lit the lamp in 11 games, Nash has a profound impact in each game he plays.

37 – Saves on the evening for Red Wings goaltender Joey MacDonald, who has been a thorn in the Blue Jackets’ side over the years. He made all the stops for Detroit, including a goal-line robbery of Derick Brassard late in the third period. MacDonald owns a 4-1-1 lifetime record against the Blue Jackets with one shutout, and has defeated Columbus twice this season.

1 – To signify the first NHL fight for Blue Jackets center Derek MacKenzie, who dropped the gloves with Red Wings forward Drew Miller in the first period. It has been a career season for the veteran center, as he has already accumulated career-best totals in goals (8) and points (19).

Post-Game Quotes

Blue Jackets Head Coach Scott Arniel
Commenting on tonight's game…

"I didn't like our start obviously – terrible start against a team that played last night. We had more than our share of opportunities to at least get one goal. We had opportunities and just weren't crisp. We didn't execute the way we should have tonight."

Commenting on Rick Nash and the team's trouble scoring…
"We're gripping our stick tight a little bit. (Nash), like the rest of our team is having trouble putting it in the net. We're hitting sticks and skates and crossbars and goalies that are outside the net. He's doing everything he can and creating his chances."

Blue Jackets Captain Rick Nash

Commenting on tonight's game…

"We didn't finish. We just didn’t finish tonight. We had lots of opportunities, but again we didn’t bear down. It's been tough, the goalies have been playing well, but we have been having chances and letting up a bit. We had a couple open nets tonight. Its tough, those are game changers."

Blue Jackets Goaltender Steve Mason
Commenting on tonight's game…

"You never want to give up a goal in the first minute. It set you back right off the bat. They drove the lane and were able to get the rebound and put it in. It was one of those games that is a big game for us and we threw a lot of pucks at Joey (MacDonald) and he played great and he is one of the reasons they won."

Detroit Red Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock
Commenting on tonight's game…

"Obviously we were shorthanded too many times and that was disappointing. I thought (Joey) MacDonald was real good. We scored on the first shift and that line was good all night. Then we relaxed and got a little sloppy, we got a nice power play goal. We weren’t near as good as we were last night but we found a way to win on the road in back to back nights so it's a good win for us."
