Team Wolfe Wins 2011 Owners' Tournament
Michael Chaput scores twice, including game winner
2011 COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS OWNERS’ TOURNAMENT

Michael Chaput scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist to lead Team Wolfe to a 5-2 win over Team Pizzuti in the Championship Game of the 2011 Columbus Blue Jackets Owners’ Tournament at the OhioHealth Ice Haus on Sunday. A standing room only crowd saw Team Wolfe score the game’s final five goals after falling behind 2-0 in the first period.
Team Pizzuti got on the board early as Kris Russell scored just two minutes into the game to give his team a 1-0 lead. Russell then set up a goal by Maksim Mayorov to push the lead to 2-0 midway through the period before Chaput scored his first of the game at the 14:23 mark to cut the Team Pizzuti lead to 2-1. Chaput and Austin Madaisky set up Aaron Bogosian’s goal with just 1:46 left in the first to pull Team Wolfe even at 2-2.
The first 15 minutes of the final period belonged to goaltenders Steve Mason (Team Wolfe) and Mark Dekanich (Team Pizzuti) as neither team could find the back of the net. That changed at the 14:59 mark when Matt Calvert sprung Chaput on a breakaway. Chaput snapped the puck past Dekanich to give Team Wolfe its first lead of the game 3-2. Mason withstood a furious rally late in the period by Team Pizzuti and empty net goals by Derek Dorsett and Boone Jenner in the final minute rounded out the scoring
Team McConnell stormed back from an early 1-0 deficit to beat the 2010 Owners’ Tournament champions Team Crane 4-1 in the Consolation Game of this year’s tournament. Ryan Johansen led Team McConnell with a goal and two assists, while goaltender Curtis Sanford overcame an early goal against to pick up the win in net.
Team Crane opened the scoring on a goal by Aaron Johnson just 1:33 into the game. The rest of the period belonged to Sanford and Team Crane goaltender Allen York as neither team scored over the final 18:27 of the first.
Team McConnell seized control of the game early in the second, scoring three times in a span of 4:10. The flurry began when Johansen set up an Adam Payerl goal at the 3:00 mark to tie the game at 1-1. Tomas Kubalik scored with an assist from Nick Drazenovic at 5:50 of the second to give Team McConnell a 2-1 lead. Alexandre Giroux capped the rally by taking a Johansen pass and knocking it past York at 7:10 of the second to push the Team McConnell lead to 3-1. Johansen rounded out the scoring when he took a Petr Straka pass and slid it past York to finish a 2-on-1 break at the 17:35 mark.
Dalton Smith scored a pair of goals, Jared Boll added two assists and Mark Dekanich allowed one goal to pick up the win in net as Team Pizzuti beat Team McConnell 4-1 in the opening game of the 2011 Columbus Blue Jackets Owners’ Tournament.
Team Pizzuti scored three goals in less than seven minutes to take a 3-0 lead after the first period. Lukas Sedlak, a 2011 draft pick, opened the scoring with a goal assisted by Rick Nash and Boll at the 11:30 mark. Smith’s first goal of the game – set up by Maksim Mayorov – came just 41 seconds later and pushed the Team Pizzuti lead to 2-0. Kris Russell scored at the 18:17 mark to make it 3-0 at the break.
Team McConnell tried to climb back in it and cut the lead to 3-1 when Vinny Prospal set up Jeff Carter for a goal just 18 seconds into the second period. However, Smith beat Team McConnell goaltender Curtis Sanford five minutes later, which put the finishing touches on the 4-1 win.
The second semi-final game of the 2011 Columbus Blue Jackets Owners’ Tournament saw defending champion Team Crane fall to Team Wolfe 4-1 as Derek Dorsett tallied a goal and an assist and Steve Mason turned aside all but one shot in net.
Team Wolfe took an early 1-0 lead when Cam Atkinson intercepted a cross-ice pass at his own blue line, raced in and beat goaltender Allen York with a wicked wrist shot. The lead doubled to 2-0 midway through the period when 2011 draft pick Boone Jenner scored a power play goal on assists from Dorsett and Steve Delisle at the 9:50 mark. Team Crane pulled within 2-1 less than three minutes later thanks to a goal by Fedor Tyutin, which rounded out the first period scoring.
Dorsett opened the scoring in the second period when he converted a pass from Delisle at the 3:00 mark to push the Team Wolfe lead to 3-1. Team Crane pulled York for an extra attacker late in the period, but Antoine Vermette scored into the empty net with just 20 seconds remaining to seal the win.
