Not much seemed to go right for the Blue Jackets in Philadelphia tonight.

Seeking their first road victory of the season and looking to make amends for a disappointing loss to the Maple Leafs earlier in the week, the Blue Jackets yielded a goal on the first shot of the game and were down 5-0 to the Flyers before the first period ended.

The Flyers had eight different players score goals in the game – including two from rookie center Sean Couturier – en route to a 9-2 victory at the Wells Fargo Center. Blue Jackets goaltender Steve Mason was pulled after the fourth Philadelphia goal, but then returned to the net as the second period began.

Philadelphia’s lead swelled to 8-0 after 40 minutes of play and the Blue Jackets did not get on the board until the latter stages of the third period. Rick Nash lead a 3-on-2 rush into the Flyers zone, and fed a drop pass to Derek Dorsett who had just come off the bench. Dorsett ripped a wrist shot through the blocker side of Ilya Bryzgalov, making it an 8-1 game.

Grant Clitsome was credited with the second goal for Columbus. The defenseman picked up a loose puck and threw it into traffic, where it ricocheted a couple of times before bouncing behind Bryzgalov. Philadelphia’s goaltender was the busier tonight, making 33 saves including 19 in the third period alone as the Blue Jackets tried to get a rally going.

The Flyers got two early goals from James van Riemsdyk and Jaromir Jagr, but a two-goal deficit is more than manageable. Columbus appeared to be getting its game going midway through the first period, but a goal scored by Maxime Talbot deflated them.

Former Blue Jacket forward Jakub Voracek made a nice feed across the slot to Talbot, who snuck a backhander underneath a sliding Mason with 6:51 left in the first period. That gave the Flyers a 3-0 lead and in the end, it was the game-winning goal.

- Wells Fargo Center remains one of two places the Blue Jackets have not conquered on the road. The Blue Jackets are now 2-5-3 all-time against Philadelphia, including a 0-3-1 mark at Wells Fargo Center after tonight’s loss.

- The nine goals allowed by Columbus were the second most goals against in team history. San Jose scored 10 on Mar. 30, 2002 in a 10-2 win at HP Pavilion. Columbus’ seven-goal defeat was the second worst in club history. The Blue Jackets have not been shut out in 37 games.

- Vinny Prospal keeps on keeping on, picking up an assist on Clitsome’s third-period goal. Prospal has points in nine of 14 games this season after that assist, and has 5-6-11 to tie for the team lead in points. He pushed his career totals to 232-459-691 in 992 NHL games.

- Despite being on the hunt for his first goal of the season, Antoine Vermette has picked up his game of late and the scoresheet is reflective of that. Vermette has assists in three-straight games after picking up an assist on Dorsett’s goal. He also has assists in seven of the past eight games and is tied with Nash for the team lead in assists.

- Dorsett scored his first goal in 11 games with his second of the season tonight. He last scored Oct. 8 at Minnesota. He had four hits and was +1 on the night.
