Arniel plans to play two goalies on California trip; Savard stays

The Blue Jackets held an hour-long practice session this morning before departing for San Jose and a four-game road trip this afternoon.

It was their second consecutive practice since a disappointing New Year’s Eve loss to the Washington Capitals, and several players spoke today about being ready to put 2011 behind them and turning the page to a new calendar year.

There’s a lot of ground to be made up, but that will not deter them from trying to make 2012 a successful one, goaltender Curtis Sanford said.

“We can’t dwell on what 2011 left us,” Sanford told BlueJackets.com. “We can make sure we come prepared to start 2012 off right what’s in the past now is in the past.

“We have to keep moving forward and keep on a positive track, and do ourselves a favor and get back into things.”

This marks Columbus’ first foray into California in 2011-12, but their first trip to the Golden State a year ago was one to remember. San Jose, Los Angeles and Anaheim are unforgiving buildings for opponents, but the Blue Jackets swept all three games last November including a 3-0 shutout of the Sharks at HP Pavilion, a game in which Rick Nash collected a hat trick.

Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel acknowledged his team needs to be ready to match the Sharks from the opening faceoff, as they are a team that wants to overwhelm you early.

“San Jose comes at you right away; they come real hard with their electric crowd in there,” Arniel told BlueJackets.com. “They can score goals in a hurry if you’re not ready to go.

“They’ve also given up goals, so it’s an area we have to make sure we come out right away and do all the good things you need to do on a road trip to get yourself in the game.”

David Savard

SAVARD ON THE TRIP
David Savard, recently recalled in the wake of James Wisniewski’s ankle injury, will be making the trip with the Blue Jackets. In 23 games with the Springfield Falcons, Savard had 2-9-11 and was a +1 while leading the team’s defense in scoring.

This is Savard’s second stint with the Blue Jackets this season, and this time around, he’s prepared and likely to play a bigger role.

“I went down and played a lot of minutes, and it definitely helped me get my confidence back,” Savard told BlueJackets.com. “I played in every situation and it’s nice to get on the ice for everything and get feeling good about my game.

“I’ll do my best, and if I get in some games, I want to help our team win.”

NEWS AND NOTES
-Arniel confirmed he plans to use both goaltenders on the upcoming four-game road trip.

-The Blue Jackets officially placed Wisniewski on injured reserve today. He is expected to miss six weeks with his ankle injury.
