Blue Jackets D Radek Martinek to Miss Rest of the Season, Club Signs D Brett Lebda to One-Year Contract

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Columbus Blue Jackets Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson announced January 19 that defenseman Radek Martinek will miss the remainder of the season due to post-concussion symptoms and that the club has signed defenseman Brett Lebda to a one-year contract. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Martinek, 35, scored one goal in seven games with Columbus this season before suffering a concussion in a game at Detroit on October 21 that has sidelined him for the past 39 games. Signed by the club as a free agent last July, he has registered 22-82-104 and 272 penalty minutes in 460 games with the Blue Jackets and New York Islanders.

“After consulting with our medical team it was determined that it would be in Radek’s best interest not to play again this season,” said Howson. “Radek is very disappointed, as are we, that he will not return to the ice this year but his health moving forward is the most important factor in this decision.”

Lebda, 30, has registered 19 goals and 53 assists for 72 points with 215 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating in 367 career NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. This season, he appeared in 26 games with the Springfield Falcons, Columbus’ American Hockey League affiliate, and collected 1-9-10 and 18 penalty minutes with an even plus/minus rating.

Lebda spent six-plus seasons in the Red Wings organization after signing with the club as a free agent on Apr. 3, 2004. He went on to collect 18-50-68 and 201 penalty minutes in 326 games with Detroit from 2005-10, including a career-high 5-13-18 and 61 penalty minutes in 2006-07. He added 0-10-10 and 40 penalty minutes in 62 playoff games and helped the Red Wings capture the Stanley Cup following the 2007-08 season. He spent the 2010-11 season with Toronto and picked up 1-3-4 and 14 penalty minutes in 41 games with the Maple Leafs.

A native of Buffalo Grove, Illinois, he spent two years with the United States National Team Development Program before playing four seasons at the University of Notre Dame (Central Collegiate Hockey Association) from 2000-04. He registered 26-59-85 and 253 penalty minutes in 152 career games, earning CCHA All-Rookie Team honors in 2000-01 and CCHA Second All-Star Team honors in 2003-04.
