Jan. 17 – at BLUE JACKETS 4, Edmonton 2: Curtis Sanford made 21 saves and the Blue Jackets got goals from four different players to overcome an early 2-0 deficit and earn the win. The Oilers used goals by Anton Lander and Ben Eager 8:50 into the game to build a 2-0 lead before the Jackets tied the game on second period tallies by Ryan Johansen and Derick Brassard. Derek MacKenzie scored the eventual game-winner 32 seconds into the third period and Derek Dorsett sealed the win with an empty net goal at the 19:38 mark. Columbus went 2-of-2 on the power play and held Edmonton to 0-of-3 with the man advantage… Jan. 19 – Nashville 3, at BLUE JACKETS 0: Pekka Rinne made 38 saves as Nashville won despite being outshot 38 to 25 by the Blue Jackets. Following a scoreless first period, the Predators took a 2-0 lead on goals by Martin Erat and Mike Fisher in the second period. Shea Weber’s power play goal into an empty net at 19:28 iced the game as the Jackets were shut out for the first time this season. Steve Mason stopped 22-of-24 shots in net for Columbus… Jan. 21 – at Detroit 3, BLUE JACKETS 2 (SO): Detroit won its franchise record 16th-straight home game thanks to Valtteri Filppula’s goal in the fourth round of the shootout. The Blue Jackets took 1-0 and 2-1 leads on goals by Ryan Russell and Nikita Nikitin only to see Detroit answer with goals by Niklas Kronwall and Nicklas Lidstrom. Curtis Sanford made 29 saves in net for Columbus, while Jimmy Howard made 17 saves for Detroit. The Jackets went 1-of-3 on the power play, while Detroit conveted 1-of-4 power play chances.
The Blue Jackets are in the midst of playing six-straight games on the road – three before the All-Star Break (3-2 SOL at Detroit on Jan. 21, Jan. 23 at Nashville and Jan. 24 at Tampa Bay) and three after (Jan. 31 at San Jose, Feb. 1 at Los Angeles and Feb. 3 at Anaheim) – before returning home to host Minnesota on Feb. 7… Columbus has killed off 49-of-60 opponent power plays (81.7 pct.) over the past 18 games since Dec. 13… The Jackets have converted 3-of-8 power play chances (37.5 pct.) over the past three games to snap a 1-of-24 drought… The Blue Jackets are 7-10-6 in one-goal games this season with their 10 losses the most in the NHL… Columbus is tied for sixth in the NHL in face-off percentage at 51.9 percent.
JACKETS SIGN FORMER WING, LEAF BRETT LEBDA; MARTINEK OUT FOR THE SEASON
The Blue Jackets signed D Brett Lebda to a one-year contract on Jan. 19, which was the same day the club announced that D Radek Martinek would miss the rest of the season due to post-concussion symptoms. Lebda has registered 19-53-72 with 215 penalty minutes and a +17 plus/minus rating in 367 career NHL games with the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs and helped Detroit win the 2008 Stanley Cup championship. This season, he appeared in 26 games with the Springfield Falcons, Columbus’ American Hockey League affiliate, and collected 1-9-10 and 18 penalty minutes with an even plus/minus rating. Martinek, who was signed as a free agent last July, scored one goal in seven games with Columbus before suffering a concussion at Detroit on Oct. 21.
JOHANSEN TO APPEAR AT THIS WEEKEND’S ALL-STAR FESTIVITIES
C Ryan Johansen was one of 12 rookies selected last week to participate at the 2012 NHL All-Star Weekend in Ottawa this weekend. The 12 rookies, along with the 42 All-Stars, will participate in the 2012 Molson Canadian NHL All-Star Skills Competition on Saturday, January 28 at Scotiabank Place (7 p.m.). Johansen, 19, has tallied 7-8-16 with 20 penalty minutes and a +3 plus/minus rating in 41 games this season. He is tied for the NHL lead among rookies with three game-winning goals and is tied for 10th in goals and points. Ryan will be writing a daily blog on BlueJackets.com about his experience in Ottawa this weekend. The All-Star Game will take place Sunday at 4 p.m. ET (NBC Sports Network).
SANFORD CONTINUES TO SHINE
G Curtis Sanford has gone 3-3-1 with a 1.96 goals-against average, .931 save percentage and one shutout in seven starts during the month of January. He has stopped 201-of-216 shots faced in those games, allowed two goals or less five time and made 30 or more saves on four occasions. For the season, he is 8-10-4 with a 2.51 GAA, .914 SV% with one shutout in 24 games.
RW Rick Nash has tallied 6-2-8 in the last 11 games… C Derick Brassard has racked up 5-5-10 in his last 15 games compared to 2-3-5 in his first 24 games… C Antoine Vermette, who has picked up 2-5-7 in his last 11 games, has won 37-of-53 face-offs in the past three games and ranks fourth-T in the NHL in face-off win percentage (57.7 percent)… LW Ryan Russell scored his second career goal at Detroit on Jan. 21 in his eighth game since being recalled from Springfield (AHL)… RW Derek Dorsett, who ranks fourth in the NHL with 109 PIM, has doubled his career high for goals and is four points shy of matching his personal best in points with 8-5-13 in 45 games.
