Blue Jackets Acquire D Jack Johnson and First Round Draft Pick from Los Angeles Kings for C Jeff Carter

COLUMBUS, OHIO – The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired defenseman Jack Johnson and a first round pick in either the 2012 or 2013 Entry Draft from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for center Jeff Carter, club Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Scott Howson announced this evening. The deal is subject to the completion of player physicals.

Johnson, 25, has recorded eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points with 44 penalty minutes, while averaging 22:30 of ice time per game in 61 outings with Los Angeles this season. He has matched his career high in goals, ranking fifth on the club and leading all Kings’ defensemen in that category. He ranked second on the club with four game-winning goals and was tied for third with five power play goals.

“Jack is a talented young defenseman who will strengthen our defense corps and we are very excited to add him to our organization,” said Howson. “We are committed to re-shaping our club and moving forward. Adding a player like Jack and a first round pick are important parts of that process.”

Carolina’s first pick, third overall, in the 2005 Entry Draft, Johnson has collected 30-94-124 and 256 penalty minutes in 343 career NHL games. He set career highs in assists, points and games played with 5-37-42 and 44 penalty minutes in 82 games last season and set a career high in goals with 8-28-36 and 48 penalty minutes in 80 games in 2009-10. He also represented the United States at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, British Columbia and had 0-1-1 and two penalty minutes in six games as the team captured the silver medal.

Prior to his professional career, the Indianapolis, Indiana native played two seasons at the University of Michigan from 2005-07 and notched 26-45-71, 236 penalty minutes and a +37 cumulative plus/minus rating in 74 games. He was named to the CCHA All-Rookie team after he registered 10-22-32, 149 penalty minutes and was +11 in 38 games in 2005-06. The next season he earned CCHA First All-Star Team and NCAA West First All-American Team honors after he tallied 16-23-39, 87 penalty minutes and was +26 in 36 games in 2006-07. He played two seasons for the United States National Development Team Program and had 27-40-67 and 314 penalty minutes in 98 games from 2003-05.

Carter tallied 15-10-25 and 14 penalty minutes in 39 games with Columbus this season and has registered 196-172-368, 302 penalty minutes and a +40 cumulative plus/minus rating in 500 career NHL games with Columbus and Philadelphia. He was acquired by the Blue Jackets from the Flyers on June 23, 2011.
