LAST WEEK’S RESULTS
Mar. 6 – at BLUE JACKETS 3, Phoenix 2: Steve Mason made 38 saves and Jack Johnson tallied 1-1-2 to lead the Blue Jackets to the win. Columbus jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game’s first 3:54 on goals by R.J. Umberger and Johnson to chase Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith. The Coyotes cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by former Jacket Antoine Vermette at 11:57 of the first before Derek MacKenzie’s goal 3:02 into the second period pushed the CBJ advantage to 3-1. A Keith Yandle goal made it 3-2 at the 16:26 mark but Phoenix could not get the equalizer past Mason, who stopped all 13 shots he faced in the third period… Mar. 8 – at BLUE JACKETS 3, Los Angeles 1: Jack Johnson scored the game-winning goal and Mark Letestu added a pair of goals to lead Columbus to its fourth-straight win. With the game tied at 1-1 on goals by Mark Letestu and L.A.’s Anze Kopitar, Johnson scored with nine seconds left in the first period to put the Jackets in front. Letestu’s second of the night at 3:07 rounded out the scoring. Steve Mason stopped 16-of-17 shots in net before suffering a hand injury in the second period. Curtis Sanford came on in relief and stopped all 13 shots he faced. Jonathan Bernier made 33 saves for the Kings… Mar. 10 – at St. Louis 4, BLUE JACKETS 1 – The Blues broke open a close game with a pair of goals midway through the second period and went on to snap Columbus’ four-game winning streak. St. Louis led 1-0 after one period on a goal by David Perron before the Jackets tied the game when Cam Atkinson scored 2:24 into the second. The Blues responded with goals by Chris Stewart and T.J. Oshie at 9:17 and 14:38, respectively and put the game away thanks to an Alex Pietrangelo power play goal at 7:11 of the third. Brian Elliott made 21 saves to earn the win in net, while Curtis Sanford made 25 saves for Columbus. The Blues went 2-of-6 on the power play, while the Jackets were 0-of-4… Mar. 11 – St. Louis 2, at BLUE JACKETS 1 – Jaroslav Halak made 33 saves and David Perron netted the game-winning goal 3:46 into the third period to lead the Blues to a sweep of the home-and-home set with the Jackets. Patrick Berglund’s goal 1:09 into the second period gave the visitors a 1-0 lead before Columbus tied the game at 1-1 on a Mark Letestu goal at the 11:20 mark. Curtis Sanford made 24 saves for the Jackets, who held a 34 to 26 edge in shots on goal but went 0-of-8 on the power play. St. Louis was 0-of-4 with the man advantage.
The Blue Jackets have gone 9-8-1 in their last 18 games since Feb. 3 and had a season-best four-game winning streak from Mar. 1-8… Columbus has gone 4-2-1 in its last seven road games dating back to Feb. 3, outscoring its opponents 18 to 16 during that span… The Blue Jackets have gone 0-of-24 on the power play in their last five games after converting 14-of-52 (26.9 pct.) over their previous 13 games… The Jackets have successfully killed off 36-of-43 opponent power play attempts (83.7 pct.) over the past 13 games… A total of 30 players have scored at least one goal for the Blue Jackets this season, which is the most in the NHL and a franchise record (previous mark of 28 set last season and 2003-04).
JOHNSON MAKES IMPACT ON BLUELINE
Since D Jack Johnson was held without a point and was -4 in his first two games as a Blue Jacket, he has collected 2-2-4 with a +5 plus/minus rating while firing off 18 shots, registering 11 hits with eight blocked shots in his last six games with the club. He picked up his first multi-point game as a Jacket with 1-1-2 vs. Phoenix on Mar. 6 and scored his first game-winning goal with the club against his former Kings teammates on Mar. 8. He has now collected 10-18-28 in 69 games this season and is four assists shy of 100 in his NHL career (32-96-128 in 351 games).
LETESTU ON THE MARK AT CENTER
After playing much of the season on the wing, C Mark Letestu has moved back to the middle of the ice and is currently riding a season-best four-game point streak. He has collected 3-2-5 with a +3 plus/minus rating, 12 shots on goal and is averaging 20:30 TOI during the streak. His season totals are 8-10-18, -14, 79 shots and 14:33 TOI in 49 games.
HAND INJURY COOLS RED-HOT MASON
G Steve Mason has gone 7-3-1 with a 2.67 goals-against average, .922 save percentage and one shutout in his last 11 starts, stopping 318-of-345 shots he has faced since Feb. 11. He has registered 30 or more saves in eight of those 11 games and won his last four starts. He made 33 saves to pick up his first shutout of the season at Phoenix on Mar. 3, stopped 30-of-32 shots to beat the Coyotes on Mar. 6 and turned aside 16-of-17 shots to beat Los Angeles on Mar. 8 despite leaving that game with a hand injury at the 11:08 mark of the second period. He is listed as day-to-day.
C Derick Brassard has tallied 10-17-27 in his last 35 games and had a five-game point streak (1-5-6) snapped at St. Louis on Mar. 10… LW R.J. Umberger has collected 8-13-21 in his last 38 games compared to 3-4-7 in his first 26 outings… LW Vinny Prospal has picked up 2-12-14 in his last 19 games… D Brett Lebda has picked up assists in each of the past two games to record his first point streak as a Blue Jacket… C Derek MacKenzie has notched 2-1-3 in his last four games.
