The Blue Jackets community organized their very own #CBJDraftLotteryTweetUp Party

They watched. They listened. They held their hands behind their heads in disbelief as the Edmonton Oilers were revealed as the 2012 NHL Draft Lottery winners. But regardless, the true winners last night were Blue Jackets fans – who yet again displayed their unwavering passion for their team.

In the weeks leading up to the draft lottery on Tuesday night, a group of Blue Jackets fans came up with the idea to organize a “TweetUp,” where fans who interact on social media sites can gather and watch the show together.

The Blue Jackets held their own TweetUp earlier this year sponsored by Papa John’s (on Feb. 12 vs. the Anaheim Ducks) -- PHOTOS, and the idea came from a group that holds regular TweetUps behind the cannon at Nationwide Arena – you can find them there every home game during the first intermission.

Why hold these TweetUps? The answer is easy, according to Alison Lukan (@AlisonL), who helped spearhead the effort to get the lottery event started.

“Having the fellow fans around us when we didn’t end up winning the first overall pick – those who get how you’re feeling – was the silver lining of the night and that was our goal,” Lukan said. “The idea was to continue providing opportunities for any and all fans to come together. Again, it’s one of the perks to get to know cool people who have a passion for the team, and building on the success of other events like Cannonfest.

“We tried to find to opportunities to come together around Blue Jackets hockey and our shared interests. As Blue Jackets fans, we are proud of our team, we love our team, and we want to represent the organization positively to the community, and that’s a major reason why we do this.”

The fans, as they always do, showed tremendous support for the grassroots event and turned out in droves. For the first time, some put faces (or Twitter handles) to names and had conversations with the people they’ve become accustomed to talking to on a digital basis.

Blue Jackets prospects fanatic Jas Chaffin (@CBJProspects) put a list together of the top North American and European forwards, defensemen and goaltenders at the upcoming NHL Entry Draft in Pittsburgh. Chaffin was part of a digital media panel featuring FOXSportsOhio.com writer Steph Greegor (@greegor23), The Cannon editor Matt Wagner (@cbjcannon and @bzarcher), and Greg May (@gregin120) from FullMentalJackets.com.
The panel discussed their expectations for the draft lottery, reflected on the recently-completed Blue Jackets season and talked about players that surprised them over the course of the year.

“It’s always really touching and a great honor that someone wants you to be part of the event and be a representative for the fans and the online social media community,” Wagner said. “I think it was a wonderful showing for fans, with the enthusiasm everyone showed to just come out and watch a draft lottery.

“It shows how deep the fan base and the community really reaches when you get that kind of showing for an event like this.”
